The Laurel Highlands School District approved a preliminary budget with a $2.4 million deficit at its meeting Wednesday night. The tentative budget of $65,757,231 marks a $90,000 increase over the one in place for 2025-26, said Thomas Shetterly, the district’s acting business manager, during Wednesday’s meeting. “Over the next month, the administration, the board are going to work to pare that down to a balanced budget,” he said. The board will hold a work session at 5 p.m. June 15 in the board room of the administration office. Calfrac branch in Smithfield to close, cutting 75 jobs

The Fayette County branch of a Canadian oilfield services company will be closing later this year. The Smithfield facility of the Calgary, Alberta-based Calfrac Well Services employs 75 people, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification the company filed last week with the state Department of Labor. Layoffs will occur in phases, starting on July 20 and ending on Sept. 30, the notice said. The company did not return calls for comment. Calfrac reported first-quarter revenues of $305.1 million in 2026, compared to $370.1 million the previous year, which its quarterly reported attributed in part to lower North American activity. The company’s services include ...

Canonsburg man accused of beating elderly grandmother with cane

A Canonsburg man is accused of beating his 87-year-old grandmother with a cane last weekend, causing injuries to her head. Canonsburg police were investigating a hit-and-run crash in the 100 block of Hutchinson Avenue about 2:30 a.m. Sunday when they knocked on the door of a nearby residence and could see an elderly woman sitting in a chair bleeding. Two men looked through the door at police, but shut the lights off and went upstairs, although the woman eventually got up from her chair and allowed officers to enter, according to court documents. The woman, who had a paper towel to control the bleeding and was holding a bag of frozen vegetables on her head, told officers she was afraid ...

Veterans group to honor Civil War bugler

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) will conduct a solemn Memorial Day ceremony honoring John Ross Dunn, bugler of the 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry, known as “The Ringgolds,” at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery in Ruff Creek. SCI-Fayette inmate found dead in cell

There was no sign of foul play in the death of an SCI-Fayette inmate, the state police said in a news release Tuesday. The body of Lavell Jones, 55, was found alone in his locked cell around 9:27 p.m. May 21, police said. The county coroner’s office released the body to a funeral home. Fayette County Coroner Dr. Bob Baker said Wednesday that typically occurs in cases in which the person is elderly or has known health issues that make an autopsy unnecessary. In a written response, the SCI-Fayette superintendent’s office declined to comment on Jones’ health prior to his death, citing the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. It referred questions to state police ...

OP-ED: Changing the direction of U.S. labor

Memorial Day, a day set aside to honor fallen veterans, is a red letter day for American labor - literally. On Memorial Day 1937, union blood was spilled in Chicago, when 10 were killed and nearly a hundred protesters were injured during a steelworkers' strike rally. It was a tragic, ...
