MVAA hosting fife workshop

Mon Valley Association for the Arts will be hosting a fife workshop Jan. 19 at the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center, 119 Brownsville Ave., Brownsville. Introduction to new fifers will take place at 10:30 a.m. Instruction will be provided by Walter Sweet, a renowned master fifer with more than 30 years of experience, at 11 a.m. All ages are welcome. Two accused of shooting at one another outside Brownsville tavern

Two Fayette County residents are charged with attempted homicide after an exchange of gunfire outside a Luzerne Township bar in October. Kaleia Howard, 30, of Connellsville, and Quinton Brown Jr., 33, of Brownsville, allegedly escalated a fight that had started among several people inside Jilly’s Restaurant and Tavern on Hiller Avenue. After a brawl broke out, Howard and another woman began arguing, after which the woman threw a bottle at Howard, according to court paperwork. Her brother and Brown then started a separate physical altercation, which continued outside, the complaint said. Somerset County man killed in Fayette crash

A Somerset County man was killed Wednesday evening in a two-vehicle crash on Route 40 in South Union Township. First responders were called to the scene about 6:28 p.m. The crash involving a minivan and another vehicle occurred in the eastbound lane of Route 40, near a runaway truck ramp, said Fayette County 911 dispatchers. Michael Duritsky, 28, of Addison, the driver of the minivan, was pronounced dead at the scene, Fayette County Coroner Dr. Bob Baker said in a release. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured or identified.

Greene announces tourism grant program

The Greene County Heritage Tourism Grant Program has opened. The program was established to support programs, events and initiatives that commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States, while helping strengthen Greene County’s appeal as a tourism, convention and travel destination. The grant program, administered through the Greene County Tourist Promotion Agency, will provide funding awards ranging from $250 to $2,500 for projects that attract visitors, celebrate local heritage and engage the community.
