Monday, Jan. 26, marks the opening of the nation’s 2026 tax filing season, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayers have until Wednesday, April 15, to file their 2025 tax returns and pay any tax due. The IRS expects to receive about 164 million individual income tax returns this year, with most taxpayers filing electronically. State police responded to 1,098 crashes across Pennsylvania during its New Year’s enforcement period. Between Dec. 31 and Jan. 4, there were also 378 drivers arrested for driving under the influence. State police did not provide statistics for individual troops or counties. According to the state police report, there were three crashes that killed three people over the five-day period. There were also 4,377 speeding tickets issued, 508 citations for failure to wear a seat belt and 60 for not securing children in safety seats.
