WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital launching cancer support group
WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital will launch a new cancer support group this month, providing a welcoming environment for individuals and families affected by cancer to connect, share experiences, and receive support close to home.
The cancer support group will be facilitated by Vicki Montgomery, palliative care team; Melissa Visger, supervisor of care management; and Stacey Pocius, director of care management and social work.
Meetings are planned for noon to 1 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month in the Community Room at Uniontown Hospital. The group is open to anyone whose life has been impacted by cancer, including individuals undergoing treatment, cancer survivors, those in remission, caregivers, and family members. There is no cost to participate.
“Together, we offer strength during difficult moments, celebrate victories both large and small, and remind one another that there is always hope, support, and someone who cares,” Visger said.
“Our support group will make a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of our community members,” Montgomery said.
As the program evolves, hospital leaders hope to create a sustainable local resource that is easily accessible to residents throughout Fayette County and the surrounding region.
The support group is part of Uniontown Hospital’s broader commitment to supporting the emotional, social, and practical needs of patients throughout their healthcare journey.
“This program reflects our commitment to caring for the whole person,” Karyn Wallace, president and CEO of Uniontown Hospital, said. “While clinical care is essential, support systems are equally important for patients and families facing a cancer diagnosis. We are grateful to our Patient and Family Advisory Council and the team members who worked to make this resource available to our community.”
Participants can share experiences, discuss challenges, learn from others, and build meaningful connections within a supportive community.
While walk-ins are welcome, participants are encouraged to register in advance by emailing UniontownCancerSupport@WVUMedicine.org or by calling 724-430-5361.
