DVSSP invites community to take action during Domestic Violence Awareness Month

3 min read

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania (DVSSP) is inviting residents, businesses, schools, and community organizations across Washington, Greene, and Fayette counties to help raise awareness, honor survivors, and take steps to prevent domestic violence.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month provides an opportunity to recognize the impact of abuse, remember those who have lost their lives, and connect people with resources for safety and support. Awareness also helps communities recognize unhealthy relationship behaviors, challenge misconceptions about abuse, and ensure survivors know where to turn for help.

“Domestic violence often happens behind closed doors, but our response as a community can be visible,” said Megan Hegedus, CEO of DVSSP. “When someone sees a purple bow, a yard sign, or a message of support, it can remind them that they are not alone and that help is available. These simple actions also open the door to conversations that can make our communities safer.”

DVSSP encourages community members to participate throughout October by:

Displaying purple bows and DVAM yard signs. Place them at homes, businesses, and community spaces, or illuminate a porch with a purple light. Contact DVSSP’s Community Impact team at 724-223-5477 or edutrain@peacefromdv.org to request signs, bows, and other awareness materials.

Wearing purple on Purple Thursday, Oct. 15. Organize a purple-themed day at a workplace, school, or community organization. Share photos on social media using #DVSSP and #PurpleThursday.

Learning and sharing information. Schedule a DVSSP guest speaker for a workplace, school, faith-based organization, or community group. Follow @peacefromdv on social media and share DVSSP’s posts throughout the month.

Joining the Purple Porch Project. Illuminate your porch with a purple light throughout October to honor survivors and show your support for ending domestic violence. Encourage neighbors and local businesses to participate and help spread awareness across the community.

Supporting services for survivors. Attend DVSSP’s 20th Annual Peace Begins at Home Dinner on Oct. 15 at Hollywood Casino at the Meadows, or make a donation to support the organization’s work.

“Everyone has a role in preventing domestic violence,” Hegedus said. “Whether you invite us to speak to your organization, share information about our services, or show support by wearing purple, you are helping build a community where survivors feel supported and everyone feels safe and respected in their relationships.”
