Strong gusts of wind swept through southwestern Pennsylvania on Monday morning, causing scattered power outages in Washington, Greene and Fayette counties and ushering in a plummet in temperatures.

The drop started early Monday, after some areas in western Pennsylvania hovered around 60 degrees at midnight, according to National Weather Service Pittsburgh meteorologist Chris Leonardi.

A wind advisory is in effect for most of southwestern Pennsylvania through 1 a.m. Tuesday. Winds between 15 and 30 miles per hour, with gusts up to 50 mph were expected.

At Washington County Airport, wind gusts were measured at 43 mph at 7 a.m. Monday.

Additionally, a winter weather advisory is in effect through 1 p.m. Tuesday for portions of Fayette County, with snow accumulations between 2 to 6 inches in parts of the area and northern West Virginia.

“Winter is back,” said Leonardi. “The temperature is crashing. At midnight, it was still in the 60s in some areas, but temperatures are falling through the 30s and will be in the 20s Monday afternoon. And once the temperature gets there, it will stay there. It won’t get above 30 degrees (Tuesday) and it will be in the 20s and 30s for the rest of the week.”

While Pittsburghers didn’t see a white Christmas, there’s a good likelihood they will see snow on New Year’s Day.

For First Night festivities in Pittsburgh, the temperature will be about 30 degrees around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, and according to the early forecast, it will be around 24 degrees when the clock strikes midnight, with the wind chill making it feel like 13 degrees.

“There’s another chance of snow on New Year’s Eve. We’re keeping an eye on that now,” said Leonardi.
