Amid frigid temperatures and biting wind chills Tuesday, firefighters in Fayette County battled a house fire that destroyed the residence and left several people homeless.

Crews were called to 606 Meadow St. in the Ronco neighborhood of German Township and found the house engulfed in flames.

No injuries were reported as all of the residents were able to get out, Fayette County Emergency Management spokeswoman Sue Kozak-Griffith said. It was not immediately known how many residents or families lived in the duplex, but officials with the American Red Cross confirmed the organization was assisting them.

Crews were on scene for about three hours, Kozak-Griffith said. The duplex appeared to be destroyed, with the roof collapsed into the structure.

Adah firefighters were assisted at the scene by numerous neighboring departments from Greene and Fayette counties, while other crews were placed on standby.

Kozak-Griffith said firefighters were not hampered by the cold weather due to the number of tanker trucks they had available at the scene to battle the blaze.

“They had a rapid (response) and great mutual aid,” she said. “They got a lot of tankers and a quick attack.”

The state police fire marshal is investigating what caused the blaze, which was not immediately known.

A few hours earlier in the day, firefighters were dispatched to a vehicle fire that endangered a structure in Luzerne Township, but they were able to extinguish the blaze before it damaged the building.
