Dowling overtakes Mahoney in 51st District race

Republican challenger Matthew Dowling has overtaken incumbent Rep. Tim Mahoney, D-South Union Township in the race for the 51st Legislative District seat in the state General Assembly.

According to unofficial results, Dowling has garnered 8,096 votes to Mahoney’s 6,825 with 41 of 80 Fayette County precincts and 66 of 68 Somerset County precincits reporting.

Mahoney is narrowly leading Dowling in Fayette County (5,598 votes to 5,349) but Dowling has more than doubled Mahoney’s vote count in Somerset County by a 2,747 to 1,227 vote margin.

The 51st District includes the city of Uniontown; Georges, German, Henry Clay, Nicholson, South Union, Springfield, Springhill, Stewart and Wharton townships; and Fairchance, Markleysburg, Ohiopyle, Point Marion and Smithfield boroughs in Fayette County.

It also includes Addison, Elk Lick, Lower Turkeyfoot, Summit and Upper Turkeyfoot townships and the boroughs of Addison, Confluence, Garrett, Meyersdale, Salisbury and Ursina, in Somerset County.

Mahoney is seeking his sixth term as state representative for the 51st District.
