‘Science of Speed’ roars into the Kamin Science Center
Want to zip around a track on a high-end electric kart or hop on an immersive racing simulator?
Then you will definitely want to make your way to the Kamin Science Center on Pittsburgh’s North Shore and check out its new Science of Speed permanent exhibit.
Taking up what had been the Science Center’s SportsWorks building, Science of Speed – its full name is
Science of Speed, Powered by Lenovo – officially opened to the public last weekend. It covers 21,000-square feet and is being billed as a “STEM destination” where visitors can not only race karts and try out simulators but also “discover how physics, engineering, and technology power every turn and split-second decision.”
“By merging the excitement of racing with STEM-focused learning, Science of Speed reflects what Carnegie Museums strives to provide at all our museums — extraordinary experiences that inspire curiosity and connect people to the ideas and inventions that shape our world,” said Dr. Steven Knapp, president and CEO of Carnegie Museums.
According to Jason Brown, the director of Kamin Science Center,. “Instead of simply reading about physics or engineering, visitors will feel the forces acting on a race car, make split-second decisions behind the wheel, and immediately connect those moments to the technology and STEM concepts that power today’s fastest vehicles. It’s a thrilling and immersive learning experience that is unlike any museum across the country.”
Science of Speed features four components:
-A multi-level, all-electric kart track
Visitors can race high-end karts on a multi-level indoor track featuring elevation changes, hairpin turns, and head-to-head competition while experiencing concepts such as traction, aerodynamics, energy transfer, momentum, and reaction time.
-Immersive Racing Simulators
Visitors can also experience the precision, strategy, and split-second decision-making required in professional motorsports on five state-of-the-art simulators, including the WAVE Italy Formula 1 Motion Simulator — the only simulator of its kind in Western Pennsylvania. – along with four interconnected SimGear racing simulators.
-Interactive STEM Exhibits
The science behind speed can be explored through hands-on exhibits focused on engineering, aerodynamics, materials science, energy transfer, data analytics, and human performance. Featured artifacts include the legendary 1959 race car Ol’ Yaller, an exploded-engine Audi R8, a Ducati racing motorcycle, and a signed racing suit from MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez.
-Pit Stop Lounge
Light bites, local beers, craft cocktails, and other refreshments will be available in the mezzanine lounge overlooking the track.
On Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays starting at 5 p.m.., Science of Speed transforms into an after-hours entertainment destination for adults ages 18 and older. The racing will be speedier and there will be food and drinks.
The Kamin Science Center was officially given its new name last year following a large gift from philanthropists Daniel and Carole Kamin, and it is in the process of upgrading more than 75% of its exhibition spaces by the end of 2027.
