Three of Claude Monet’s paintings join ‘French Moderns’ exhibit
Three paintings by Claude Monet have been added to the exhibit “French Moderns: Matisse, Renoir, Degas,” now on view at the Frick Pittsburgh through Oct. 11.
Due to a travel coincidence, the Frick was given the opportunity to display the Monet paintings as they returned to the East Coast after being on loan in another exhibit.
They will be featured in The Frick Art Museum’s Jacobean Gallery. The three newly added paintings include “Houses of Parliament, Sunlight Effect,” “Rising Tide at Pourville” and “Banks of the Seine at Lavacourt.” The three paintings capture distinct moments in Monet’s career. Each canvas was purchased from the artist by Paul Durand-Ruel, one of the greatest champions of Impressionist art, before being acquired by an American collector.
“Rising Tide at Pourville” depicts the windswept coast of Normandy. It was one of 17 similar paintings made by Monet, exploring the effects of light and atmosphere from different perspectives and at different times of day, an important precursor to his famous series produced in the 1890s. “Houses of Parliament, Sunlight Effect” is one of 19 versions that Monet painted of the Parliament building in London from his vantage point on a balcony of Saint Thomas’s Hospital across the River Thames in the early 20th century. Both are part of the Brooklyn Museum’s collection.
Finally, “Banks of the Seine at Lavacourt” is from the Frick’s permanent collection and is returning to the museum after being out on loan.
All three paintings were recently featured in the exhibition, “Monet and Venice,” organized by the Brooklyn Museum and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
