Sycamore post office temporarily closed
Postal Service loses lease on building
People in Sycamore will have a little further to travel to mail a package.
The post office in the Greene County community closed temporarily, effective at the end of business Monday, U.S. Postal Service spokesman Mark Lawrence said.
In a statement, the Postal Service said it had lost the lease on the building at 123 WW Railroad Road, necessitating the closure.
No timeline has been set for reopening.
Sycamore has 10 post office box customers, Lawrence said. Additionally, there is one carrier route handling 275 delivery points.
For the time being, those with post office boxes can get their mail at the Waynesburg post office, he said.
Mail delivery to Sycamore residents will continue normally, though they are being directed to Waynesburg to pick up vacation mail, signature-required items, or oversized articles, the USPS said.
Judy Moninger, secretary at the Morris Township administrative office in Sycamore, said residents have already called asking about the post office.
She said people and businesses in the township will feel the impact of the closure.
“There’s a lot of certifieds that go out here because of the industry that we have here,” she said. “So if they can’t get them delivered, they’re going to have to go to Waynesburg to pick the certifieds up.”
Moninger, who sometimes sells items on eBay, said she’ll need to go elsewhere to ship her items. Graysville is about as close as Waynesburg. She’s heard some people talk about going to the post office in Prosperity, which is open later than the Graysville location.
But the sooner the temporary closure ends, the better, based on what Moninger’s hearing.
“There’s some residents that are not real happy,” she said.
