Local roundup: West Greene races past Lady Greyhounds, 59-21

Jillissa Yeater scored a game-high 14 points and West Greene raced out to a 27-5 lead in the first quarter on its way to a 59-21 win at Monessen in a Section 2-A girls basketball game on Monday.

The Lady Pioneers held a 43-13 advantage at halftime and took a 51-21 lead into the fourth quarter.

Kendra Tharp posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds for West Greene (3-1, 7-2), which also got 11 points from Katie Brudnock, all in the opening frame.

The Lady Pioneers have surrendered a total of 14 points in the second half of their last three games.

Madison Johnson paced the Lady Greyhounds (2-2, 2-4).

Bentworth 43, Carmichaels 20 – Bella Moyer scored 16 points in the Lady Bearcats’ Section 3-2A win over the host Lady Mikes.

Brielle added 12 points for Bentworth (2-0, 5-3).

Joselyn Carter led Carmichaels with six points and Ke’Lani Chun chipped in with four points.

Beth-Center 53, Jefferson-Morgan 20 – Mary Bower made five 3-pointers in scoring a game-high 17 points as the Lady Bulldogs (1-1, 2-5) beat the host Lady Rockets in a Section 3-2A game.

Ava Wood paced J-M (0-2, 4-3) with 10 points.

Saturday, Dec. 20

Jefferson-Morgan 57, Morgantown Christian Academy 47 – John Woodward tossed in 19 points as the Rockets remained unbeaten with a boys basketball win over MCA at the Clay-Battelle Tournament in West Virginia.

Jefferson-Morgan (7-0) led 14-4, 28-18 and 44-37 at the quarter breaks.

Jeremiah Robertson had 10 points for J-M.

Friday, Dec. 19

Waynesburg Central 63, Brownsville 44 – Cole Headlee poured in a career-high 36 points and added four assists in the Raiders’ Section 4-3A win at Brownsville.

Dane Woods added 13 points and eight rebounds for Waynesburg (1-0, 3-4) which led 9-7 after the first quarter and gradually extended its advantage from there.

Maxime Dieudonne topped the Falcons (0-1, 0-5) in scoring with 12 points and Cameron Phillips added 10.

Carmichaels 62, Burgettstown 49 – Chase Ankrom tallied a game-high 20 points as the Mikes earned their first win of the season in a Section 3-2A game at Burgettstown.

Carmichaels led 14-9, 28-24 and 39-32 at the quarter breaks, then pulled away with a 23-17 advantage in the fourth.

Scott Maskil Jr. added 15 points and Brayden Andrews contributed 10 for the Mikes (1-2, 1-5).

Blake Neal had 19 points for the Blue Devils (0-3, 1-5) who also got 15 points from Colton County.

Jefferson-Morgan 52, Trinity Christian (W.Va.) 39 – John Woodward scored 16 points as the Rockets remained unbeaten with a win over the Warriors at the Clay Battelle Tournament.

Dayten Marion and Jeremiah Roberts followed with 12 points apiece for J-M (6-0).

Jefferson-Morgan jumped out to a 20-10 lead in the opening quarter but Trinity Christian fought back to within 30-23 at halftime and 37-34 at the end of the third.

The Rockets out-scored the Warriors (3-1) 15-5 in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Maddox Mousadis had 21 points for Trinity Christian and Austin Porta added 12.

Chartiers-Houston 63, West Greene 19 – Bryson Boskovich had 20 points in the host Bucs’ Section 3-2A win over the Pioneers.

Brody McCrerey tossed in 11 points for Chartiers-Houston (3-0, 6-2).

Matt Wassil topped West Greene (2-1, 2-4) in scoring with 12 points.

Girls basketball

Bentworth 37, Mapletown 32 – Jesse Laskey and Bella Moyer both had 11 points in the Lady Bearcats’ non-section victory at Mapletown on Friday night.

Nora Lindley chipped in with eight points and 15 rebounds for Bentworth (4-3).

McKenna Lotspeich paced the Lady Maples (1-8) with 13 points and Sophia Jennings added eight points.

Thursday, Dec. 18

West Greene 53, Clairton 17 — The Lady Pioneers took control in the second quarter and cruised to a Section 2-A girls basketball victory over the Lady Bears at Clairton High School.

West Greene (2-1, 6-2) outscored the home team, 19-1, in the third quarter, and 12-3 in the fourth. The Lady Pioneers had a 13-4 edge in the second period.

Clairton (0-3, 1-4) played West Greene tough in the first quarter, as both teams scored nine points.

The Lady Pioneers’ Kendra Tharp had a game-high 14 points. Teammates Jillissa Yeater and Katie Brudnock put in nine points apiece.

Wednesday, Dec. 17

Jefferson-Morgan 39, Bentworth 21 — Jefferson-Morgan outlasted host Bentworth in Section 3-2A boys wrestling action.

The Rockets’ E.J. Lingenfield (152), Geno Orlandi (160), Landon Heath (285) and Caleb Dulaney (114) won by fall.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Payton Bastian edged Paxton Thomas, 5-4, at 189 pounds in a tossup match.

The Rockets’ Austin Grandel (107) and Connor Pinchok (133) won by forfeit.

Jefferson-Morgan improved to 1-0 in the section and 8-0 overall.

McGuffey 60, Waynesburg Central 15 — The Highlanders won six of the eight bouts that were contested in a non-section victory at Waynesburg Central High School.

The Raiders’ Roan Tustin won by fall in 3:00 at 215 pounds. Teammate Ky-Mani Sumpter earned a 6-3 decision at 189.

Lincoln Fisher received a forfeit at 285.

McGuffey’s Clayton (127) and Lane Ealy (133), Josh Barr (139), Michael Cosato (145), Victor Bonus (152) and Kash Main (172) won by fall.

Waynesburg dropped to 2-6 while the Highlanders remain undefeated at 8-0.

Boys basketball

Chartiers-Houston 56, Waynesburg Central 53 — The Buccaneers rallied in the second half for a non-section triumph at Chartiers-Houston.

The Raiders (2-4) trailed by one after the first quarter, but used a 13-7 advantage in the second period for a 28-23 halftime edge.

The Buccaneers (5-2) outscored the visitors by eight in the second half.

Waynesburg’s Dane Woods had a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Teammate Jackson Dean had 11 points and eight rebounds. Austin Surber was also in double figures with 11.

The Raiders’ Cole Headlee had seven assists.

Tuesday, Dec. 16

Jefferson-Morgan 46, Beth-Center 29 — Jeremiah Robertson tallied 17 points as the host Rockets remained unbeaten with a Section 3-2A boys basketball victory over the Bulldogs (1-1, 3-2).

Jefferson-Morgan led 16-9 after one quarter, 25-14 at halftime and 33-22 after three.

Dayten Marion contributed 13 points for the Rockets (2-0, 4-0) and Brayden Ellsworth added 10, including a pair of 3-pointers.

West Greene 55, Mapletown 20 — Matt Wassil scored 14 points in the Pioneers’ Section 3-2A victory at Mapletown.

Darren Knight followed with 13 points and Will Shipman added 12 for West Greene (1-0, 1-3).

The Pioneers led 18-6, 31-10 and 55-16 at the quarter breaks.

Colton Taylor and Kaleb Evosevich led Mapletown (0-2, 0-6) with eight points apiece.

Chartiers-Houston 56, Carmichaels 17 — Wes Yeater made four 3-pointers in scoring a 14 points as the Bucs rolled past the host Mikes in a Section 3-2A game.

Chartiers-Houston (2-0, 4-2) put 11 different players in the scoring column.

Brayden Andrews had six points for Carmichaels (0-1, 0-4).

Seton LaSalle 70, Waynesburg Central 43 — Jaleel White had 19 points in the host Rebels’ non-section win over the Raiders.

Seton LaSalle (5-2) led 16-4, 29-17 and 46-29 at the quarter breaks.

Charlie Crummie (13) and Dayvaughn Williams (10) also were double-digit scorers for the Rebels..

Cole Headlee totaled 15 points, five assists and four rebounds for Waynesburg (2-3), which also got 14 points from Dane Woods and five rebounds from Quentin Williams.

Girls basketball

West Greene 50, Mapletown 12 — The Lady Pioneers led only 14-10 after the first quarter but out-scored the host Lady Maples 36-2 the rest of the way to earn a Section 2-A win.

Kendra Tharp led West Greene (1-1, 5-2) with 14 points and was followed by Madelyn Roberts (13) and Jillissa Yeater (11).

Taylor Mitchell scored four points for Mapletown (0-2, 1-6).

Fort Cherry 52, Carmichaels 13 — Allison Litman and Emily Pfender each had 11 points in the Lady Rangers’ non-section win at Carmichaels.

Julie Klose added 10 points for Fort Cherry (2-4).

Ke’Lani Chun scored five points for the Lady Mikes (1-5).
