Local roundup: Vanata helps Maples claim first win of season

Winning pitcher Carson Vanata was 2 for 2 with a triple, two stolen bases and two runs as Mapletown held off host Monessen, 6-5, to earn its first win of the season in non-section baseball action Monday.

Cameryn Shaffer’s tie-breaking, run-scoring single in Mapletown’s two-run sixth inning put the visitors ahead to stay. Coltin Halbert also had an RBI single for the Maples (1-6, 1-9).

Vanata struck out nine in 5 2/3 innings. Sam Moritz recorded the final four outs with three strikeouts to earn the save.

The Greyhounds fell to 0-6 in the section and 0-9 overall.

GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC 10, CARMICHAELS 2 – Tyler Samide hit a grand slam as the first-place Centurions (5-0, 5-0) defeated the Mikes in a Section 1-A game.

Ryder Krieg had a single and an RBI for Carmichaels (4-3, 5-5), which also got a single and a run from Owen Ray and an RBI from Brayden Andrews.

JEFFERSON-MORGAN 8, WEST GREENE 4 – Winning pitcher John Woodward pitched five scoreless inning and had two hits and three RBIS and Deakyn DeHoet was 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs in the Rockets’ Section 1-A win over the host Pioneers.

Tyler McVay doubled, sinlged and knocked in two runs for Jefferson-Morgan (3-4, 4-7). Woodward allowed just three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Jacob Rizor had a single and two RBIs for West Greene (2-3, 2-9), which also got a double from Levi Yeater.

WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 4, SETON LASALLE 2 – Winning pitcher CJ Corwin threw a two-hitter and Austin Surber was 3 for 3 and scored three runs in the Raiders’ Section 4-3A win over the first-place Rebels (6-1, 7-2).

Kory Taylor had a single and an RBI for Waynesburg (3-2, 3-7), which also got one RBI each from Jaxon Parker and Grant Pack.

Corwin allowed one earned run with two walks and three strikeouts.

SOFTBALL

BROWNSVILLE 3, WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 1 – Ava Clark outdueled Gina Tedrow in the host Lady Falcons’ Section 4-2A victory over the Lady Raiders.

Clark allowed two hits with no walks and 14 strikeouts.

Brownsville (4-2, 6-3) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Emma Leigh Bailey reached on a bunt single, took second on a wild pitch, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch. Lyla Gill doubled for Brownsville’s only other hit.

The Lady Falcons tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning.

Waynesburg scored its only run in the seventh on Kalee Piper’s RBI single. Ellie Makel doubled for the Lady Raiders (2-3, 5-5). Tedrow gave up one earned run on two hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

CARMICHAELS 15, MAPLETOWN 0 – Lily Sisler hit an inside-the-park grand slam and winning pitcher Bailey Barnyak blasted a three-run homer while tossing an abbreviated perfect game in the Lady Mikes’ three-inning, Section 2-A win over the visiting Lady Maples (0-6, 1-7).

Barnyak struke out all nine batters she faced with 40 pitches.

Ke’Lani Chun tripled and singled and Carys McConnell drove in two runs with an RBI double and a sacrifice fly for Carmichaels (4-1, 6-3), which also got two hits and two RBIs from Kenlee Machesky.

WEST GREENE 18, BETH-CENTER 2 – Kylee Davis and Caitlin Whyte each had a triple, single and three RBIs as the Lady Pioneers marched to a four-inning, Section 2-A victory over the host Lady Bulldogs.

Kendra Tharp doubled and also knocked in three runs for West Greene (5-1, 8-3), which also got two RBIs from Josie Mason and, a triple, single and an RBI from Katie Brudnock and two hits from winning pitcher Sammi Zimmerman. Whyte scored four runs.

Zimmerman allowed three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Bella Stepp had a double and two RBIs for B-C (2-4, 3-6), which also got a double from Sarah Bader.

JEFFERSON-MORGAN 15, AVELLA 1 – Emilee Bazzoli threw a three-hitter and Ava Wood doubled, singled and knocked in four runs in the Lady Rockets’ six-inning, Section 2-A win over the host Lady Eagles.

Bazzoli walked two and struck out 15 in allowing one unearned run.

Gabriella Marmie had three hits, Bazzoli singled twice and had two RBIs and Addyson Teagarden contributed two hits and an RBI for J-M (5-1, 8-2), which also got two hits from Addalei Larkin and a single and an RBI from both Kallyn Novak and Braelynn Bayles.

FRIDAY, APRIL 10

WEST GREENE 11, AVELLA 0 – Sammia Zimmerman threw a one-hitter and Emmaline Beazell had two hits and three RBIs in the Lady Pioneers’ five-inning, Section 2-A softball victory over the visiting Lady Eagles.

Zimmerman walked none while striking out 11.

Josie Mason doubled and knocked in two runs for West Greene (4-1, 7-3), which also got two hits from Madelyn Roberts and two RBIs from Caitlin Whyte.

Kaylee Donnelly had the only hit for Avella (0-2, 0-5). Paisley Downey was the losing pitcher.

BETH-CENTER 12, MAPLETOWN 1 – Sarah Bader had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs in the Lady Bulldogs’ Section 2-A victory over the Lady Maples.

Winning pitcher Kendall Welsh added a double, two singles and an RBI and Keira Lamp smacked a triple and knocked in three runs for Beth-Center (2-3, 3-5).

Makenna Lotspeich doubled for Mapletown (0-5, 1-6).

BASEBALL

JEFFERSON-MORGAN 7, CHARLEROI 2 – Winning pitcher Brayden Ellsworth and Dayten Marion both had a single and two RBIs as the visiting Rockets soared past the Cougars (3-4) in a non-section game.

Deakyn DeHoet added a double and an RBI and Drew Admas also drove in a run for J-M (3-7). Ellsworth gave up five hits with three walks and six strikeout in a tossing a complete game.

Luke Henderson had two hits and an RBI for Charleroi.

CARLYNTON 17, MAPLETOWN 2 – Isaac Anker and Tyler Heinrich both had three RBIs as the Cougars (2-6) beat the Maples in a non-section game.

Coltin Halbert had two hits, including a double, and an RBI and Carson Vanata singled and scored for Mapletown (0-9).

THURSDAY, APRIL 9

WEST GREENE 15, MAPLETOWN 0 – Caitlin White smacked a double, knocked in five runs and threw an abbreviated no-hitter as the Lady Pioneers romped over host Mapletown in a three-inning Section 2-A softball game.

White walked one and struck out five of the 10 baters she faced.

West Greene scored six runs in the top of the second and nine more in the third.

Emmaline Beazell was 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs, Kendra Tharp had a triple and an RBI and Madelyn Roberts and Rylee Yeager drove in two runs apiece for the Lady Pioneers (3-1, 6-3), who also got a double and an RBI from Katie Burdnock.

Mila Wrick took the loss for Mapletown (0-4, 1-5).

WASHINGTON 5, WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 4 – The Lady Prexies scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and winning pitcher Chessa Henderson made sure the one-run lead stood up with a scoreless seventh in a Section 4-2A victory over the visiting Lady Raiders.

Kali Hagan hit a solo home run, Tateionna Warren had two doubles and an RBI and Mayaja Lee doubled and singled for the Lady Prexies (3-0, 6-1), who also got a double and an RBI from Sophie McCort.

Washington trailed 4-3 when they took advantage of a wild pitch and an outfield error to push across a pair of runs.

Henderson gave up eight hits and walked three with 12 strikeouts.

Devin Moore singled and knocked in three runs and Ellie Makel had two hits and an RBI for Waynesburg (2-2, 5-4), which also got two hits apiece from losing pitcher Gina Tedrow and Bria Stephenson.

Tedrow allowed three earned runs on five hits and four walks with 15 strikeouts.

BASEBALL

TURKEYFOOT VALLEY 5, MAPLETOWN 4 – Corban Stimmel singled and came around to score the winning run on an error in the Rams’ non-section, walk-off victory over the visiting Maples.

Winning pitcher Lee Bowers surrendered four unearned runs on seven hits with no walks and nine strikeouts as Turkeyfoot (1-5) won its first game of the season.

Kaleb Evosevich and Careryn Shaffer each had two hits and an RBI for Mapletown (0-8).

WASHINGTON 8, WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 4 – Caleb Patton knocked in three runs with a triple and a single as the visiting Prexies knocked off the Raiders in a Section 4-3A game.

Washington led 7-1 when Waynesburg rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth to slice the gap to three but could get not closer.

William Callan had a triple and two RBIs for the Prexies (3-3, 6-4), who also got a triple from winning pitcher Tristan Coney and two hits apiece from Isaac Charnik and Noah Patton.

Coney gave up one earned run on six hits with four innings. Patton earned the save with three scoreless innings of relief.

Grant Pack had three hits and an RBI and CJ Corwin added two hits and two RBIs for Waynesburg (2-2, 2-7), which also got a double and a single from losing pitcher Jarett Tretinik and a double from Kory Taylor.

Tretinik gave up seven runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts in five innings.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8

JEFFERSON-MORGAN 10, AVELLA 0 — Deakyn DeHoet was 3 for 4 with a double, triple and an RBI and John Woodward twirled a six-inning, one-hit shutout as the Rockets handed the visiting Eagles their first Section 1-A baseball loss of the season.

Woodward walked three and struck out 11 and added two hits and two RBIs with the bat.

Drew Adams had two hits, including a double, and Brayden Ellsworth contributed a double and an RBI for Jefferson-Morgan (), which also got a hit and two RBIs from Dayten Marion and a single and an RBI from both Jaymison Robinson and Tyler McVay.

WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 8, WASHINGTON 2 — CJ Corwin didn’t allow an earned run on 6 ⅔ innings in the Raiders’ Section 4-3A victory over the Prexies in Washington.

Corwin allowed two runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. He had a base hit and drove in two runs.

Austin Surber had three hits and an RBI for Waynesburg (2-1, 2-6). Teammate Jarett Tretinik tripled and scored twice.

Logan Bochna knocked in a pair of runs and singled for the visitors.

William Callan hit a two-run home run for the Prexies (2-3, 4-4). He also had a single. Joe Wilson had three base hits for the home team. Noah Patton had two singles for Washington.

SOFTBALL

BETH-CENTER 15, MAPLETOWN 5 — The Lady Bulldogs scored a combined 10 runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a Section 2-1A triumph over the Lady Maples at Beth-Center.

Kendall Welsh had 10 strikeouts and walked two in earning the pitching win. She yielded five earned runs on eight hits over six innings. Welsh also doubled and drove in two runs.

Teammate Bella Stepp tripled and had two RBIs.

Beth-Center’s Keira Lamp knocked in four runs and tripled. Emmalee Liberatore added two RBIs for the home team.

Mapletown’s Makenna Lotspeich had two singles.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 1-3 in section action and 2-5 overall.

TUESDAY, APRIL 7

WEST GREENE 15, MAPLETOWN 0 – Joel Rizor twirled a four-inning one-hitter with two walks and seven strikeouts as the host Pioneers cruised past the Maples in a Section 1-A baseball game.

Rizor also added a double and two RBIs with the bat as West Greene (1-2, 1-8) earned its first win of the season.

Levi Yeater had two hits and three RBIs and Xavier Lucey and Dylan Hughes both had two hits and two RBIs for the Pioneers, who also got two RBIs from Jackson Grimes.

Kaleb Evosevich had the only hit for Mapletown (0-5, 0-6).

AVELLA 11, JEFFERSON-MORGAN 8 – Winning pitcher Bryce Wright and a double and two RBIs and the Eagles held off a late Rockets uprising to claim a Section 1-A victory.

Avella (5-0, 7-1) built a 6-0 lead after three innings. J-M scored twice in the fourth before the Eagles pushed the lead up to 9-2 with a run in the bottom of the inning and two more in the fifth.

Both teams scored twice in the sixth, leaving Avella up 11-4, but Jefferson-Morgan plated four runs in the seventh and had the tying run at the plate when the game ended.

Noah Kimberland doubled for the Eagles.

Losing pitcher Drew Adams had a single and three RBIs and Brayden Ellsworth doubled and knocked in two runs for the Rockets (1-4, 1-7), who also got a double from Deakyn DeHoet.

JEANNETTE 7, CARMICHAELS 4 – The Jayhawks rallied from an early 3-1 deficit with two runs in each the third, four and fifth innings to top the host Mikes in a Section 1-A game.

Noah Rattigan homered and had two RBIs for Jeannette (1-2, 4-3). Winning pitcher Wyatt Schaeffer gave up three runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings of relief.

Brayden Andrews and Dominic Yazzani both had a single and an RBI for Carmichaels (3-2, 4-4), which also got two hits from Jordan Davis.

SOFTBALL

WEST GREENE 10, JEFFERSON-MORGAN 8 – Josie Mason drove in six runs with a double and two singles as the Lady Pioneers held off the Lady Rockets after taking an early 7-0 lead in a Section 2-A battle.

Emmaline Beazell was 2 for 3 with three runs and Madelyn Roberts also had two hits for West Greene (2-1, 5-2).

The Lady Pioneers scored three runs in the first and four in the second before J-M plated a run in the top of the third.

West Greene got that run back in the bottom of the inning for an 8-1 advantage but the Lady Rockets rang up five runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to closer within 8-7.

The Lady Pioneers pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Winning pitcher Sammie Zimmerman gave up three earned runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout in four-plus innings. Caitlin Whyte surrendered three earned runs on five hits in three innings with two walks and three strikeouts to earn the save.

Losing pitcher Emilee Bazzoli was 4 for 5 with two RBIs for Jefferson-Morgan (3-1, 6-2), which also got two hits apiece from Gabriella Marmie and Ava Wood.
