National Adult Day Services Week — Sept. 20 through 26 — is an opportunity to recognize the important role adult day services play in supporting older adults and their families. While these programs provide a safe and supportive environment during the day, their benefits extend well beyond supervision. Adult day services can promote physical activity, social connection, healthy routines and greater independence.

For families caring for an aging loved one, adult day services also can provide valuable support while allowing individuals to remain in their homes and communities for as long as possible.

“Adult day services are about much more than keeping someone occupied during the day,” said Danielle Heiberger, certified occupational therapy assistant and coordinator for Penn Highlands Adult Day Services. “A structured day gives participants opportunities to move, socialize, participate in meaningful activities and maintain routines that support both physical and emotional well-being.”

Regular physical activity is important at every age. Adult day programs often incorporate walking, stretching, exercise classes or other activities appropriate for participants’ abilities. Staying active can help maintain strength, balance and mobility while supporting overall health.

Adult day services also can help promote healthy eating habits by providing nutritious meals and snacks and establishing consistent mealtimes. For individuals who may have difficulty preparing meals independently, having access to regular, balanced nutrition can be particularly beneficial.

Social isolation can become a concern as people age, particularly for individuals who live alone or have limited opportunities to interact with others. Adult day services provide a setting where older individuals can develop friendships, participate in group activities and maintain meaningful social connections.

Activities such as arts and crafts, music, games, educational programs and group discussions can provide mental stimulation while giving participants a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

“Connection is an important part of healthy aging,” said Heiberger. “Having a place to go where someone is known, valued and encouraged to participate can make a meaningful difference in a person’s quality of life.”

The benefits of adult day services extend to family caregivers. Knowing a loved one is spending the day in a safe, supportive environment can give caregivers time to work, attend appointments, run errands or simply recharge. This time away from caregiving can help reduce stress and make it more sustainable for families to provide care over the long term.

Penn Highlands Adult Day Center in St. Marys provides a supportive environment where participants can stay active, engaged and connected while receiving the care and services they need. Offerings include therapeutic activities and exercise, socialization, daily meals and snacks, medication administration, assistance with bathing, nursing services such as lab work and vital sign monitoring, podiatry care and beautician services.
