Q. How can I find inspiration to go get my permit? I’ve been putting it off for over a year. What do I even do? Thank you. – 17-year-old

Mary Jo’s Response: When we delay a decision, we may be unaware of why we hesitate. It sounds as if that may be the case with you. I’ve seen this hesitation before – the longest time one of my students waited get their permit was eight years! I finally helped her get driving instruction, which eased her anxiety. Change is challenging. If you want to drive, you need to examine what’s holding you back. Are you worried about being on the road? Are you concerned about the costs of driving, like insurance?

The good news is there’s a process for getting a license. The permit is the first step. You may be concerned about the test, but studying for it is easier than ever. Search for PA permit test and you’ll find several links to the manual and to practice tests. The learner’s permit is created to give a new driver time to become proficient at driving. Knowing what comes next can ease anxiety. Here are the steps to driving in Pennsylvania:

Age: You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a learner’s permit in Pennsylvania.

Residency: You must be a Pennsylvania resident. Proof can include a utility bill, bank statement or other official mail showing a PA address.

Medical certification: A healthcare provider must complete the medical section of the Non-Commercial Learner’s Permit Application (DL-180) to ensure you meet medical standards for driving.

Required forms and documentation: Non-Commercial Learner’s Permit Application (DL-180) must be completed before visiting a PennDOT Driver License Center.

Parent or guardian consent form (DL-180TD): Required if under 18. Must be signed by a parent, guardian, or spouse 18 or older and notarized or signed in front of the examiner.

Proof of identity: Birth certificate, passport, or other accepted documents.

Social Security card: Required for identification.

Proof of residency: Required for REAL ID applications or if over 18; under 18, proof is needed only for REAL ID.

Vision screening: Must pass a vision test at the Driver License Center.

Knowledge test: 18 multiple-choice questions; a score of 83% (15/18) is required to pass. Free practice tests are available online.

Fee: $35.50 for a one-year learner’s permit. Payment must be by check or money order; cash, debit, or credit cards are not accepted.

Retest fee: $10 for each additional attempt if you fail the knowledge test.

Once you have your permit, you must complete:

Supervised driving: Permit holders under 18 must drive with a licensed adult 21 or older in front seat.

Practice hours: At least 65 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night and five hours in bad weather, over six months driving.

Passenger restrictions: Only one non-family passenger under 18 is allowed.

Good luck! Driving is a rite of passage in our culture and provides you with freedom and independence. Face your fears, talk about them with someone who loves you, and take the test!
