Man kills wife while she feeds baby

NEW OXFORD, Pa. (AP) – A man shot and killed his wife while she was feeding their 2-month-old baby and then tried to make the death look like it was a suicide before calling for help, police said. Douglas Ralph Carey, 42, was arrested on Sunday and charged with criminal homicide in the shooting death of Michelle Sueann Carey in the bedroom of their home, police said.

The Careys apparently were having an argument Friday afternoon around 1 p.m. while Michelle Carey was feeding the couple’s baby, police said. As the argument continued, police said, Douglas Carey got a bullet from the kitchen and picked up a rifle from behind a television in the bedroom.

Douglas Carey then loaded the gun, pointed it at his wife and shot her in the head, police said. Authorities said he put his wife’s hands on the gun to make it look like a suicide, took the baby and went to another location before calling Adams County Emergency Communication; the baby was not injured.

Police said the couple had lived at the home with their three children, ages 5, 4 and 2 months. Only the infant was home at the time of the alleged shooting, police said.

Douglas Carey initially told police that he was in the basement when he heard a pop, after which he went upstairs and found his wife shot, police said. Police said they kept track of his whereabouts until they were able to arrest him Sunday.

An autopsy performed Sunday determined that the death was a homicide. Police said the charges were based on interviews, physical evidence and autopsy results.

Police said additional charges are pending.

Douglas Carey was arraigned Sunday and was being held in Adams County Prison without bail.
