Carl Carnicelli

Carl Carnicelli, 87, Architect and Engineer, died in his home in Pittsburgh, Pa. He was born on Nov. 28, 1914, in Villa Grande, Tornimparte, Abbruzzo, Italy, he immigrated to the United States at the age of 18.

He was the son of the late Panfilo and Sofia Carnicelli of West Masontown.

Shortly after arriving in Masontown, the accomplished musician played the organ at All Saints Roman Catholic Church. He graduated from Masontown High School.

After serving in the United States Navy, he attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass., and graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. He began his professional career in residential construction in New Jersey, prior to establishing a private Engineering and Architectural firm in Pittsburgh. He continued his professional work until the day of his death. His passion, integrity and love for his work were distinguishing facets of his character.

In the 1950’s, at the request of the United States Navy, he participated in the designing and building of the Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear powered submarine.

During the nearly 60 years of his professional life, he was responsible for many commercial and residential building projects. His restoration and remodeling of several area churches stand as a testimony to his work with All Saints Church in Masontown, being one dearest to his heart. He was responsible for the Byzantine architecture of the Serbian Orthodox Church near Masontown.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by a brother, Floyd Carnicelli; and a sister, Julia Battaglini.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda Carnicelli of Tom’s River, N.J.; a sister, Esulina Casale of Belleville, N.J.; nieces and nephews, Carol Ann DeRogatis, Marilyn Sofia Lee, John Paul Casale, Paula Mancini, Lenora Battaglini Pecoraro, Denise Battaglini Feezor, Gerald Battaglini, Florene Carnicelli Johns, Paulette Carnicelli Pidcock, Marcia Carnicelli Minor, Candace Carnicelli, Paul Carnicelli and Sofia Carnicelli Grey; and many grand-nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at the JOHN S. MAYKUTH JR., FUNERAL HOME, corner of Church and River Aves., Masontown, Pa., on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m., and on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at All Saints Roman Catholic Church, 101 West Church St., Masontown, Monday at 10 a.m., following a 9:30 a.m., service at the funeral home.
