Convicted doctor awaits impact of post-trial motions
A Connellsville doctor will have to wait until the transcript of his trial is completed to find out how his motions for arrest of judgment or a reduced sentence will fare before a Fayette County judge. Judge Steve P. Leskinen reserved hearing motions on behalf of Dr. Mark S. Fremd until the transcript of his April trial is complete.
Fremd was convicted of several counts of insurance fraud and illegally prescribing drugs to patients. He is currently out on bond while he appeals the 1 1/2 to 3-year sentence imposed by Leskinen.
In motions filed last week, Fremd’s attorney, Paul Gettleman, asked Leskinen to modify Fremd’s sentence so that he did not have to serve time in a state prison, and could stay in the county lock-up. Any time more than two years is generally served in a state facility.
Gettleman noted in the motions that, although Fremd will likely soon lose his medical license, he could use the time before it is revoked to give back to the community he wronged if Leskinen modifies his sentence.
In a second motion, Gettleman also asked that Leskinen dismiss several of Fremd’s convictions for various reasons, including allegations of police entrapment.
