Robert N. Gibson

Robert N. “Gibbie” Gibson, age 79, a lifelong resident of Point Marion, Pa., died Thursday, February 10, 2005, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, West Virginia.

Born November 21, 1925, in Point Marion, Pa., he was a son of R. Forman Gibson and Lola (Mayfield) Gibson.

He attended the now former Point Marion High School and was a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II who served with the Air Wing as a Propeller Mechanic in the Central Pacific.

“Gibbie” retired from Consol’s Humphrey No. 7 Preparation Plant and was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 1058, the V. F.W. Post 747 and the American Legion Post 499 both in Point Marion, and the Marine Corps League Monongalia County Detachment No. 342.

He was a member of the Point Marion Volunteer Fire Department for 57 years and had previously served on the Point Marion Boro Council and also as a coach for American Legion Baseball.

“Gibbie” loved to fly vintage airplanes and in his spare time helped to restore a number of antique planes and was the proud owner of two planes he had rebuilt. He was a member of the Confederate Air Force and the Antique Airplane Association.

He was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen “Kate” Talbert Gibson on July 9, 1992, by a son, Patrick Talbert Gibson in infancy, and by his parents.

He is survived by five children and their spouses: Ronald Lee Gibson of Point Marion, Pa., Robert Mark and Elizabeth Gibson of Davistown, Pa., Forman Arthur Gibson of Clayton, Michigan, Roberta Kay and John McNab of Austintown, Ohio, and Martha Jane and Lewis Taylor of Point Marion; seven grandchildren: Danielle Wortman, Christopher Gibson, Julie Paoli, Tara Gibson, Jonathan Taylor, Chasity Demidovich and Elias Gibson; and three great grandchildren: Brooke Wortman, Brittany Wortman and Annalia Paoli.

Friends will be received in the RICHARD R. HEROD FUNERAL HOME, 501 Morgantown Street, Point Marion, Pa., today from Noon to 3 and 6 to 9 p.m. and Monday, February 14, until 11 a.m., the hour of Service.

Interment follows in Evergreen Memorial Park, Point Marion, with Military Rites accorded at graveside by the Marine Corps League.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to the Point Marion Volunteer Fire Department, 1 Cheat Street, Point Marion, PA 15474.

Point Marion V.F.D. services will be held in the Funeral Home today at 6 p.m.
