Georges to vote on budget Thursday

GEORGES TWP. – Township supervisors are expected to vote on the 2007 proposed budget during their regular meeting Thursday. According to state law, the $1.1 million budget must be adopted by the end of December.

The tentative budget calls for $908,318 to be deposited in the general fund, with the exact same amount – $908,318 – budgeted for expenses.

Likewise, $210,753 is expected to be deposited in the state fund, with $210,753 budgeted for expenses.

Major expenses include $57,000 set aside to pay for snow and ice removal, salt and ashes. In 2006, supervisors budgeted $80,209 for the same three categories and have spent $80,616 to date.

Other major expenses include salaries and wages for township employees, according to the tentative budget made available to the public.

In the general fund, the tentative budget lists two line items for salaries and wages for the road crew totaling $110,000 and two lines items for salaries and wages for road masters totaling $60,700.

Employee wages also to be taken out of the general fund in 2007 is $29,150 for the township secretary and $6,500 for the township solicitor.

Two line items for salaries and wages for the road crew totaling $81,568 are also listed in the state fund, in addition to two lines items for salaries and wages for road masters totaling $40,076.

Also coming out of the state fund in 2007 is $3,000 in wages for the borough secretary/treasurer, according to the tentative budget.

Other planned expenses in 2007 include $20,000 in the “storage building” category.

In 2006, supervisors budgeted no money for a storage building, according to the 2006 budget.

In addition, supervisors budgeted $17,000 total for overtime wages out of the general fund and $3,000 for overtime wages out of the state fund, according to the tentative budget.

The tentative budget also calls for $127,000 to be paid to Teamsters for health insurance in 2007 for township employees.

The $1.1 million tentative budget calls for no proposed tax raises.

In March, the supervisors increased the tax rate from .810 mills to 1.54 mills, resulting in residents paying $15.40 for every $10,000 in assessed property value, a difference of $7.30 from the previous rate.

The supervisors will meet at 3:45 p.m. Thursday in the township building, located at 1151 Township Drive.
