Daley outspending opponents
There is a wide difference in the spending by the candidates in the race for the 49th Legislative District, with the incumbent Peter J. Daley spending more than seven times as much as the others seeking the office. There are three Democrats and two Republicans running for the seat.
Campaign finance reports were not available for Democratic candidate James Rohaley or for Republican candidate Edward Angell.
As of March 27, the end of the last reporting period, Daley had spent $5,666.27, with a balance of $1,210.85.
He also had unpaid debts and obligations of $6,003.94, primarily in the form of loans or pledges to the committees to re-elect other legislators, including Sen. Richard Kasunic, D-Dunbar, and Rep. Vic Lescovich, D-Midway. Daley had no unitemized contributions of $50 or less from individuals.
Daley received four $250 contributions and one $500 contribution from political action committees. He also received $500 from his campaign treasurer, Donna Nicholson of Coal Center, and two $500 contributions from Ron Luci of Donora.
Nicholson received a total of $740 for office reimbursement under Daley’s listed expenses. In addition, his wife, Sally Daley, is listed as having received $750 for secretarial fees.
Other major expenses included $400 to Capitol Communications, $355.35 to Luchessi Restaurant in Monessen for a committee dinner, and $250 to himself for mileage reimbursement.
Most of Daley’s expenditures were under $100, primarily for dues for various clubs and organizations.
As of March 27 Republican Nate Nevala had raised $1,600 and had spent $799. He had no unpaid debts. Half of the money Nevala raised came in the form of unitemized contributions of $50 or less from individuals. He also received $200 from the Diana Irey Campaign Committee, $100 from Emil Galis of Coal Center and $500 from the PA Future Fund.
Nevala spent $425 for office rent, $120 for office desks, $104 for electrical service, $100 for an advertisement from the California Area Drama Club, and his campaign made a $50 contribution to Friends for Daryl Metcalfe, a Republican legislative candidate from Cranberry Township.
Democrat Randy Barli raised and spent the least of the three candidates for whom reports are available. Barli contributed and spent $260 of his own money on his campaign, with all of the money going for gasoline and filing fees, as well as food and drink at the Sunoco station in Harrisburg the day he filed his nominating petition.
