Marvelous 3 – Hey! Album

By Clint Rhodes 3 min read

Ever eat a piece of cake that was so good you just had to have a second slice? Then 15 minutes after devouring that piece, you sneak an additional finger-length scoop of icing? An extremely good piece of cake has that effect on me, as well as a great sounding album. Ever eat a piece of cake that was so good you just had to have a second slice? Then 15 minutes after devouring that piece, you sneak an additional finger-length scoop of icing? An extremely good piece of cake has that effect on me, as well as a great sounding album.

The second release from the Marvelous 3 contains an over abundance of sugary hooks and mouth watering lyrics that provide for a pleasurable overindulging experience. The Hey! Album is another great listen for the carefree days of summer. The Marvelous 3 deliver a great soundtrack for summer cruising or carousing.

This pop trio’s 1998 release blends upbeat riffs with bittersweet lyrics. The combination creates an irresistible collection of musical muscle. This is an excellent listen for all of us closet posers and lip sync extraordinaires. “You’re So Yesterday” is the perfect opener with its clever lyrics and driving beat. A fabulous blow-off relationship anthem that includes the line, “You were cool as hell like e-mail, but still timeless like a letter.” The reference may be a little dated, but the music certainly isn’t. The witty lyrics continue on “Freak of the Week” as Butch Walker asks, “Will you hold onto my head? If I ever lose it again.” On “Every Monday,” Walker pours out his heart by confessing, “Every Monday, I get this pain / Every Wednesday, it hits my brain / Every Friday I die, cuz everyday / I still think of you.”

Even though the album is full of broken relationships, self doubt and finding a place to fit in, Walker’s British-sounding vocals (he’s from Atlanta) are too slick and smooth to bring you down. Because we’ve all been there before, you can’t help but smile when hearing Walker sing about losing his girl to another, “He gave you the castle, you gave me the bird.” Perhaps the best line comes from the bouncy “Vampires in Love” as Walker confesses, “And you know that I suck at this, and you suck at it too / And now we’re nothing more than vampires in love.”

These songs won’t change the world. However, these songs will change your mood after hearing just a few chords. A great summer album is expected to put us in a worry-free, lackadaisical state of mind by sticking in our heads for what seems like an endless summer. Mission accomplished for the Marvelous 3.

So sneak another slice of cake (with plenty of icing), turn up the volume and enjoy.
