Robert C. Black, 58, of Dilliner, died at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2009, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg, after a brief illness. He was born September 14, 1951, in Waynesburg, a son of Dorothy L. Metcalf Black of Garards Fort and the late Robert E. Black.

Mr. Black was a 1969 graduate of Mapletown High School and resided in Greene County all of his life.

He worked at Consolidation Coal Co. Osage 3 Mine and was a member of United Mine Workers of America.

Mr. Black enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are a son, Steven R. Black of Dilliner; two daughters, Bobbie Lynn Cooper and husband Edward of Fairchance and Misty Renee Black of Dilliner; nine grandchildren; a sister, Linda D. Helmick and husband Chipper of Garards Fort; a nephew, Keith Helmick and wife Linda; two great-nieces and the mother of his children, Karen Morris of Point Marion.

Frederick C. Chisler

Frederick C. Chisler, 50, of Mt. Morris, died Sunday, September 27, 2009.

He was born November 2, 1958, in Waynesburg, a son of Bob R. Chisler of Core and the late Imogene Ione Price Chisler.

Mr. Chisler was a self-employed equipment operator and truck driver at the time of his death. He previously had worked for Chisler Bros. in Pentress, W.Va., for many years.

He was a member of Mt. Morris Gospel Tabernacle.

Surviving are his wife, Jackie Michael Chisler; a brother, Neil Chisler of Blacksville, W.Va.; four sisters and their spouses, Eilene and Jerry Wilson of Pentress, Martha and Douglas Lancaster of Daybrook, W.Va., Pat and Joel Bruffey of Roanoke, W.Va., and Mavis Eddy of Core, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his mother, is a brother-in-law, Melvin Eddy.

Kevin Ross George

Kevin Ross George, 45, of Carmichaels, died at 5:15 p.m. Sunday, September 27, 2009, in his residence.

He was born Tuesday, August 18, 1964, in Waynesburg, a son of the late Kenneth Wayne George and Mary Lou Ross George.

Mr. George was a graduate of Waynesburg Central High School, Class of 1982.

He enjoyed watching NASCAR.

Mr. George worked as a truck driver for Jim Webb at Route 21 Homes Inc. in Carmichaels and previously worked for Wades Body and Frame Shop in Waynesburg.

Surviving are his stepmother, Frances Moore George of Waynesburg; a sister, Beth and husband William Madden of Whiteville, N.C.; a brother, Gary W. George of Tunnelton, W.Va.; a stepsister, Charlotte and husband James Connors of Waynesburg; two stepbrothers, Carl E. Long of Jefferson and R. Wayne and wife Carolyn Long of Bremen, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased is a sister, Eleanor Cole.

Melinda Grace McNeely

Melinda Grace Patterson McNeely, 55, of Waynesburg, died Monday, September 28, 2009, in her home, following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born July 19, 1954, in Waynesburg, a daughter of Grace Parry Patterson of Waynesburg and the late Arthur J. (Pat) Patterson, M.D.

Mrs. McNeely was a 1972 graduate of Waynesburg Central High School and attended West Virginia University.

On August 18, 1973, she married James F. McNeely, who survives.

She was an insurance and billing supervisor for A.J. Patterson M.D. Associates for many years.

Mrs. McNeely was a lifelong resident of Waynesburg, where she was a member of First United Methodist Church and Greene County Horseman’s Association.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren and enjoyed raising quails, chickens, ducks and horses. She also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving, in addition to her mother and husband, are a son, Michael McNeely (Kim) of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; a daughter, Angela Riley (John) of Waynesburg; five grandchildren; two brothers, Arthur James Patterson Jr., M.D. (Janet) of Waynesburg and Carl Patterson (Cindy) of Melbourne, Fla.; two sisters, Patricia Rohanna (Bob) of Waynesburg and Anita Stoner (Gregg) of Waynesburg; her mother-in-law, JoAnn McNeely of Morgantown; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Danny P. Snyder

Danny P. Snyder, 58, of Waynesburg, died unexpectedly Monday, September 28, 2009, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg.

He was born April 3, 1951, in Waynesburg, a son of Leanna Fox Bosley of Morgantown, W.Va.

On November 4, 1977, he married Irma Wiley, who survives.

Mr. Snyder worked for 21 years in the maintenance department at Waynesburg University.

He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose in Carmichaels and Thursday Night Steak Club at Buddy’s in Waynesburg.

Mr. Snyder enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving, in addition to his mother and wife, are his stepfather, Fred Bosley of Morgantown; four children, Christina Phillips of Clarksville, Danny P. “Little Dan” Snyder and wife Tonya of Tennessee, Wendy Abbott of Carmichaels and DeAnna Ware and husband Tim of Tennessee; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Connie Barnett and husband Greg of Morgantown and Debbie Haley and husband Jim of Blacksville, W.Va.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Charles Lee Riggs

Charles Lee Riggs, 75, of Greene County, died Tuesday, September 29, 2009, in Hillsview Nursing Home in Claysville.

He was born August 2, 1934, in Wind Ridge (Greene County), a son of Harry G. and Mary Rebecca Millikin Riggs.

Mr. Riggs spent most of his life working as a farmhand, primarily at McClelland Farm in Wind Ridge.

He was known as a kind-hearted person who was a hard worker.

He loved farming and caring for animals.

Mr. Riggs was the last of his immediate family.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are two brothers, Robert Riggs and John Riggs; and two sisters, Frances Smith Sprowls and Betty I. Kulla.

Edward George Weido

Edward George (Ed) Weido, formerly of Nemacolin, passed away at 11:35 p.m. December 21, 2008, in Thompson House, Rhinebeck, N.Y.

He was born April 24, 1926, in Nemacolin, a son of Mary and John Weido, formerly of Nemacolin.

Mr. Weido and his wife, Betty Zeigler Weido, moved to Stanfordville, N.Y., three and a half years ago to live near their two sons and daughter-in-law, Jan Weido of Stanfordville, N.Y., and wife Nancy Clancy and Jerry Weido of Somerset, N.J.

He graduated from Carmichaels High School and worked at Buckeye Coal Co.

Mr. Weido served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

On February 12, 1949, he married Betty Zeigler. Together, they raised two sons. They started Keystone Refacing Co., a blackboard refinishing company. Mr. Weido worked in the mine at Nemacolin until his retirement.

Mr. Weido was an avid hunter, trapper and fly fisherman. He was a scoutmaster of a Nemacolin troop. His many hobbies included building bluebird boxes, flying model planes, boat building and reading. He was an inventive fly tier, developing new fly patterns and reviving some old standbys like bread crust. He was a generous teacher of fly tying and fly fishing to many in the area.

He was a member of Trout Unlimited, Isaac Walton League and United Mine Workers of America.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Zeigler Weido; two sons, Jerry Weido and Jan Weido; daughter-in-law, Nancy Clancy; three nieces; and three great-granddaughters.

Deceased are a brother, Steve Weido; parents Mary and John Weido; a brother, Emery Weido; a sister, Margaret (Margie) Weido; and a brother, William (Willie) Weido.

Paul Edward Stewart

Paul Edward Stewart, 72, of Waltersburg, Fayette County, formerly of New Freeport, died unexpectedly at 11:26 a.m. Thursday, October 1, 2009, in the Uniontown Hospital emergency room.

He was born August 19, 1937, in Waynesburg, a son of Paul Herman and Viola Mae Stockdale Stewart, and had resided in New Freeport for several years prior to moving to Waltersburg in 2005.

Mr. Stewart was a member of the former New Freeport Baptist Church, where he served as the Sunday school superintendent, trustee and Sunday school teacher and was a member of Perryopolis Baptist Church at the time of his death, where he was the church photographer.

He enjoyed photography, traveling and visiting local Wal-Mart stores.

Mr. Stewart was a 1955 graduate of West Greene High School and a 1959 graduate of Waynesburg College.

He was employed as a math and science teacher in grades seven to 12 by West Greene School District for more than 37 years prior to retiring in 1997, and following his retirement, he enjoyed operating the JV football scoreboard at West Greene High School and manning the ticket booths at both West Greene and Waynesburg University football games.

Mr. Stewart was a member of the PSEA and the NRA.

On October 20, 1957, he married Shirley Lee Waters, who died December 18,1991.

On May 3, 1997, he married Sandra L. Stickles, who died May 2, 2002.

On October 22, 2005, he married Joyce Ann Newell Huffine, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Deborah, wife of Steven Giesler of Sandyston Township, N.J., and Diana, wife of Martin Moninger of New Freeport; a son, John Paul, husband of Catherine Stewart of Ludlow; two sisters, Elaine Vidakovich of Ohio and Carol Ann Clark of North Carolina; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; eight stepchildren, Veronica Geary of Vanderbilt, Shelly, wife of James Miller, Valerie, wife of Ray Miller, and Leonard, husband of Barb Huffine, all of Dickerson Run, Barry, husband of Cindy Huffine of Mt. Pleasant, James Huffine of Ruffs Dale, Tammy Tringes of Waltersburg and Danny, husband of Trudi Huffine of Dawson; 23 step-grandchildren; and 19 step-great-grandchildren.

Deceased, in addition to his parents and first and second wives, are an infant brother and a stepson, Tommy Huffine.

David Ray Brock

David Ray Brock, 86, of Spraggs, died at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 2, 2009, in the home of his brother, Don.

He was born Thursday, March 22, 1923, in Whiteley Township, Greene County, a son of Ira Grant Brock and Ina Ethel Headley Brock.

Mr. Brock was a member of the former Pinoak Church of God, where he served as Sunday school teacher, superintendent and clerk.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II from 1941 to 1945.

Mr. Brock was a farmer and had worked for West Virginia University as a bus driver and parking attendant.

He enjoyed coon hunting and camping.

His first wife, Daisy McCoy Brock, died in 1974.

His second wife, Esther Matthews Brock, whom he married October 16, 1989, survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Sollars of Fairmont, W.Va.; two sons, David E. Brock and Gary R. Brock, both of Spraggs; a stepson, the Rev. Phillip W. Yost of Waynesburg; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; a brother, Donald E. Brock of Spraggs; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a daughter, Patty Pettit, and a brother, Kenneth Brock.

June I. Pratt Phillips

June I. Pratt Phillips, 89, of Carmichaels, died at 9 p.m. Saturday, October 3, 2009, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg.

She was born Tuesday, June 22, 1920, in Mather, a daughter of Richard L. Pratt and Alice Zimmerman Pratt.

Mrs. Phillips was a 50-year member of Rices Landing Boating Club. She also was a member of Greene Valley Presbyterian Church in Carmichaels, Waynesburg Senior Citizens and a former member of Women of Moose 888 of Waynesburg.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Vernon S. Phillips, died December 12, 1977.

Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Linda Diane and Ralph Nicholson of Bethel Park; six sons and their wives, Richard O. and Emma Faye Phillips of Garrettsville, Ohio, Robert H. and Bonnie Phillips of Carmichaels, Gary L. and Debbie Phillips of Rices Landing, David R. and Diane Phillips of Millsboro, Del., George E. Phillips of Carmichaels and Timothy P. and Pam Phillips of Jefferson; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a step-granddaughter; two step-great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a son, Vernon Randal Phillips; a sister, Mary Blaker; and a brother, Richard Pratt.

Nellie G. Hopwood

Nellie G. Hopwood, age 72, of Bobtown and formerly of Point Marion, died Monday, September 28, 2009 in Golden Living Center, Waynesburg, following a lengthy illness.

Born January 17, 1937 in Redstone Township, Fayette County, Nellie was the daughter of Thomas Greenwood and Mary Medved Greenwood.

Nellie was a former housekeeper at the Friendship Hill mansion for the Thompson/Martin family.

She is survived by her daughter and family, Ruth and Joseph Danko Jr. of Bobtown; two grandsons; two great-granddaughters; two brothers: Thomas Greenwood of Smithfield, Pa. and Frank Greenwood of Uniontown.; and five sisters: Mary Salonick, Dorothy Lewis and Kathy Furlong all of Uniontown, Pa., Joan Winklevoss of Smithfield, Pa., and Charlotte Barton of Butler, Pa.

She was predeceased by her husband Stanley R. Hopwood on March 3, 2008; a step-brother, Henry Greenwood; step-sister, Nellie Ruth; and her parents.

Martha Margaret French Hearn

Martha Margaret French Hearn, age 81, of Smithfield, Pa., passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 4, 2009 at the Cherry Tree Nursing Home, Uniontown, Pa.

Martha was a devoted Christian wife, mother and grandmother.

She was born at Smithfield on March 25, 1928 daughter of the now late Louis French and Catherine Shillenburger French.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Colleen Hearn, daughter-in law; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lonnie and Verma Hearn; brothers, Frank French, Harry French and Joseph French; and sisters, Louise Emerick and Elsie Matz.

She was a member of Oak Grove Church of Christ, Lake Lynn, Pa.

She is survived by her husband, Ray L. Hearn; three sons: Donald Hearn and his wife Ruthie of Waynesburg, and Dr. Raymond L .Hearn and Gregory Hearn of Smithfield; two daughters: Kathryn Pompei and husband Jerry of Finleyville, Pa. and Debbie Burnett and husband Brad of Carmichaels.; six grandchildren; one sister, Kathryn Chess and husband Raymond; one brother, Lloyd French and wife Elizabeth of Smithfield; sisters-in-law, Alice and Olive French, Louise Daniel and husband Frank Alldean Hearn; brother-in-law, Joe Hearn; and a number of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a very special sister-in-law who cared for her during her illness, Maxine Smith and her husband Harry.

Thomas Judson Haley

Thomas Judson Haley, 80, of Westlake, Ohio, formerly of Graysville, Pa., died Friday, September 11, 2009, after a long battle with cancer.

He was the son of the late William Thomas Haley and the late Helene Orndoff Haley of Graysville, Pa.

He was employed by Ford Motor Company in Brookpark, Ohio for 50 years.

He is survived by his wife Darlene (Malott), formerly of Waynesburg, Pa.; three children, Thomas Duane (Karen), Susan Kaye and Steven Jaye (Betsy); four grandchildren; one brother, Joseph Richard Haley (Betty); sisters, Mary Kathryn Sears (Richard) and Rose Ada Milanovich (Robert); and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley Ann Pritchard

Shirley Ann Doenges Pritchard, 84, died Friday, September 25, 2009 in Sumter, SC.

She was born February 4, 1925 in Detroit, MI. She completed high school in Hazard, KY and received a BS degree in Home Economics from Virginia Tech.

She taught Home Economics at Waynesburg High School in Waynesburg, Pa. for several years. She especially loved teaching her special education girls.

After living in Charleston, WV for 10 years, she and her husband lived their retirement years in Santee, SC, Sebring FL and at Wesley Commons in Greenwood, SC.

Shirley loved meeting people, playing golf and bridge with many special friends, and living her faith in Christ through teaching Sunday school, church activities and looking toward her heavenly home with faith and courage. Shirley and her husband were most recently members of First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood, SC.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 66 years, David “Bud” Pritchard; a son, David Pritchard and his wife Becky, of Sumter, SC; a daughter, Carol Baggot, and her husband, Michael of McKinleyville, CA; seven special grandchildren and eight precious great-grandchildren; a close cousin, Niki Reavely, and family of Springfield, OR; and many of the beloved Pritchard clan.

She is preceded by her parents William Doenges and Carrie Goodman, and a daughter, Shirley Ann.
