Blue Mountain outlasts Pasta Lorenzo for 4-3 victory

It was a game that may have set baseball back a few years, but Blue Mountain will take its 4-3 win over Pasta Lorenzo in a Fayette County Baseball League game Wednesday night. The game “featured” 17 walks and the teams combined for only nine base hits. John Leonard had two of Blue Mountain’s five hits, including a double. Gene Franks also doubled for Blue Mountain (9-3-2). Pasta Lorenzo managed only four singles.

Justin Schrader (3-1) worked five innings with seven strikeouts and six walks. Addison Scherich got a save in two innings of work. Brett Baker took the loss for Pasta Lorenzo (4-10-1).

Three aces reported at Nemacolin Woodlands

Three holes-in-one, including two by the same golfer, have been reported from the Links Course at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and Spa.

Tom Baxter aced the No. 2 with a 9-iron on June 30 and again on July 4. L.J. Dennis, Brad Stowers and Ray Carolla witnessed the first one, while Scarlet Baxter, Paul Humberston and Joyce Humberston witnessed the second one.

Dean Dennis of Markleysburg scored his hole-in-one on the 152-yard No. 6 hole with a 7-wood on June 2. Doug Goodwin, Vince Chisler and Tim Whetsell witnessed it.

Pens sign defenseman Andrew Hutchinson

PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman Andrew Hutchinson to a two-way contract that will pay him $500,000 if he plays in the NHL next season.

The 30-year-old Hutchinson has 135 games of NHL experience with Dallas, Tampa Bay, Carolina and Nashville, getting 12 goals and 26 assists.

Pirates acquire RHP from Padres for cash

HOUSTON (AP) – The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired right-handed reliever Sean Gallagher from San Diego on Wednesday in exchange for cash.

The Pirates, playing a three-game series in Houston, will make a corresponding roster move when Gallagher joins the team.

Gallagher (0-0) had a 5.40 ERA in 15 relief appearances for the Padres before he was designated for assignment on July 1.

He had a 2.77 ERA in his last eight relief appearances with San Diego.

The 24-year-old Gallagher has a career record of 8-9 with one save and a 5.57 ERA in 60 games since he made his major league debut with the Chicago Cubs in 2007.
