2nd Sam helps adults with disabilities

2nd SAM 9 Inc., a new pending non-profit faith-based organization, has a mission to provide safe, enriching day activities for adults with intellectual developmental disabilities in a positive, Christ-centered environment that will help them reach their fullest social, emotional and vocational potential.
Due to limited government funding, some individuals are still on a waiting list to receive such services and others are faced with cuts to the number of days they can attend their current day programs. Operating on charitable donations from individual donors, churches and corporations, 2nd SAM 9 will allow individuals to attend without cost or government (waiver) funding.
Hours of programming will be long enough to support caregivers who need a safe place for their loved ones while the caregivers go to work.
The name of 2nd SAM 9, was inspired by the Old Testament book of 2nd Samuel where kindness is shown to a person with a disability. The non-denominational board of directors includes Scott and Teresa Roberts, Barbara Barnhart, Janice Gottschalk, the Rev. Bruce Judy, Jenny Robinson and Darlene VanNorman. 2nd SAM 9 continues to hold monthly social events at West Sides, 595 W. High St., Waynesburg, until its day program is fully operational.
2nd SAM 9 is inviting the community to support this mission through initial fundraising events. A Rain Day benefit golf tournament will be held at Rohanna’s Golf Course at 1 p.m. on July 29. A gospel concert will be held at 6 p.m. on Aug. 13 with all donations benefiting 2nd SAM 9. The concert will be held at the Waynesburg First Presbyterian Church and features Jonathan White from Ohio, a singer, songwriter and musician.
