Bishop blesses cathedral Sunday

2 min read

GREENSBURG — Greensburg Bishop Lawrence E. Brandt will bless the restorations at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in a Sunday Mass that also will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Diocese of Greensburg.

The Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. in the cathedral on North Main Street in Greensburg. It is titled a Mass of Thanksgiving for the Restoration of Blessed Sacrament Cathedral with the Blessing of the New Liturgical Appointments on the Occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Diocese of Greensburg.

While there will be reserved seating for some special guests, open seating will be available on a first-come basis for the faithful of the diocese.

The total budget for the project was $3.5 million, and it is coming in under that figure.

As much as possible, the work was done by southwestern Pennsylvania contractors using union labor and American materials, said the Rev. Larry J. Kulick, who has served as a liaison between diocesan officials and the contractors.

“The overall restoration provides a new depth of beauty to the church while keeping it easily recognizable as the cathedral,” Kulick said.

“This project is truly diocesan in scope. It was made possible by generous, sacrificial gifts from the parishioners of Blessed Sacrament Cathedral and from the faithful all across our diocese,” Bishop Lawrence Brandt said. “I am profoundly grateful to everyone who helped make our campaign a success and made it possible to do this restoration of our cathedral.”
