Readers invited to participate in special anniversary tribute
HeraldStandard.com is inviting its readers to be part of a special anniversary issue.
HeraldStandard.com will be printing a special edition on Sept. 27, marking the 75th anniversary of S. W. Calkin’s purchase of the Daily Standard News in 1937.
That was his first purchase of a newspaper company. Calkins later merged the Daily Standard News with the Fayette Publishing Co. to form the Morning Herald and Evening Standard. That lasted until 1980, when the Calkins family bought out the Fayette Publishing Co. and formed the Herald-Standard, which continues to this day.
With Uniontown as his base, Calkins greatly expanded his media holdings over the years. After he died in 1973, the business has been carried on by his three daughters and five grandsons. Today, in addition to HeraldStandard.com, Calkins Media Inc. owns the Greene County Messenger, Beaver County Times, Bucks County Courier Times, the Intelligencer, the Burlington County Times, South Dade News Leader, the Ellwood City Ledger and television stations WWSB in Sarasota, Fla., Waay-TV in Huntsville, Ala., and WTXL-TV in Tallahassee, Fla.
Readers are being invited to send in photos relating to 1937 or that era.
Readers can also send in any comments they have about that era, especially if they were living during those years.
“We want to make this issue not just about the Calkins family, but about the residents of Fayette County,” said HeraldStandard.com Publisher Robert Pinarski. “We want to thank everyone who has supported this newspaper over the years, and we invite you to participate in this special issue.”
“We know from our Remember When photo feature that people like sending us photos from days of the past, so we’d like readers to send us any photos they have of the late 1930s,” said HeraldStandard.com Executive Editor Mark O’Keefe.
“In addition, we’re inviting people to share comments about how people lived back then. It could be from someone who lived back then or it could something that was written back then. We’re open to all possibilities,” said O’Keefe.
“We just want our readers to feel like they’re a part of this special anniversary,” he added.
Photos and letters can be sent to the paper at 8-18 Church St., Uniontown, Pa., 15401 or by email at hsletters@heraldstandard. For more information contact O’Keefe at 724-439-7569.
