State police investigate a train collision with a car that seriously injured a woman in her 30s at a Dawson railroad crossing Wednesday afternoon. She was flown from the scene with life threatening injuries, officials said.

A woman in her 30s was flown with life threatening injuries after a train in Dawson hit the car she was driving.

Emergency officials said the CSX train hit the car at about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Laughlin and Railroad streets. The car was on the tracks on Laughlin Street when it was hit, according to a CSX spokeswoman. Officials have not identified the woman.

The car was hit in the same area that a train hit a 9-year-old boy on Aug. 15. The boy was riding his bike when that impact occurred, and he too was flown from the scene.

At the time, several neighbors recalled multiple crashes between trains and vehicles at the railroad crossing, including a fatal collision.

“Maybe they’ll put up a crossing guard now, huh?” said a man on the scene Wednesday.

The Public Utility Commission determines what safety measures are placed at railroad crossing intersections based on its protocols. CSX works closely with the PUC, said the CSX spokeswoman. Two weeks ago, officials with CSX, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and other organizations visited the intersection as a part of Rail Safety Week, a national event headed by Operation Lifesaver, a rail safety education group. The educational event was focused on reminding drivers to watch and listen for trains before crossing tracks.

State police did not immediately release details on how the crash occurred.

“CSX appreciates the swift response of the first responders and The Pennsylvania State Police who responded to this incident, and will continue to cooperate with them in their investigation,” a statement from CSX said in part.

Since 1986, six people were injured and one person was killed at the railroad crossing in five crashes prior to the August collision, according to Federal Railroad Administration reports. The next most recent crash occurred Dec. 23, 2015, when a 26-year-old man driving 45 mph failed to stop before crossing the tracks in his SUV. He was not injured. His view was obstructed by a building, according to the report.

Three people were injured when a light locomotive hit a car stopped on the tracks Oct. 11, 2014. A person was killed and two others were injured when a freight train hit a driver who was crossing the tracks July 5, 1987. One person was injured in a crash in 1986, and no injuries were reported in a crash in 1995.

The Federal Railroad Administration revised the railroad crossing’s inventory form Aug. 9. About 24 trains pass through the crossing daily.
