Brownsville man receives house arrest for drug delivery that caused woman’s death

A Brownsville man who sold heroin that caused a woman’s death was sentenced to house arrest on Wednesday.
Matthew Joseph Brumley, 29, was sentenced on the charge of possession with intent to deliver heroin, receiving four years of intermediate punishment with two years house arrest with electronic monitoring.
In August, Brumley pleaded guilty to the drug charge and recklessly endangering another person. In exchange, prosecutors dropped a count of drug delivery resulting in death.
Charges were filed against Brumley after the Aug. 4, 2017, death of Jennifer K. Ward. Police said Ward died from combined toxicity of fentanyl, morphine, buprenorphine and Benadryl at her Point Marion apartment.
Ward’s husband reportedly told police he bought the drugs at Brumley’s home.
“I apologize for any problems I have caused,” Brumley said prior to sentencing.
Ward’s family did not offer a victim impact statement prior to sentencing.
Fayette County Judge Joseph M. George Jr. gave Brumley credit for 15 months of time served, from April 2018, to this July. The time will be applied to the electronic monitoring portion of his sentencing.
George warned Brumley that failure to comply with the conditions of his house arrest will result in George revoking Brumley’s sentence. The judge told Brumley he could resentence him to up to 15 years in prison.
