Drivers heading from Waynesburg to Uniontown on Route 21 could see improvements to the roadway in the coming years.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is still in the early stages of the improvement plan designed to help provide a roadmap for future construction projects on the corridor between Greene and Fayette counties.

An open house will be held Dec. 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Carmichaels Fire Hall on George Street, where more information will be provided.

“Rebuilding Route 21 will need to happen eventually,” said Jeremy Hughes, the assistant director of design for the project. “The corridor lacks consistency from mile to mile. The study will help develop a master plan for the future of the corridor.”

The goal is to make the corridor more reliable and safe for motorists, Hughes added.

“District 12 has been using this method recently with the I-70 Modernization Strategy and the Route 981 Laurel Valley Corridor,” Hughes said.

Any plans for construction have not been made yet, according to Hughes.

“In addition to regular maintenance work, future projects could include intersection improvements or a complete reconstruction of a portion of the highway and select sections of pedestrian improvements,” Hughes said.
