The Fayette County commissioners unanimously approved the final budget for next year, which will not raise taxes on residents.

The commissioners voted on the final budget at their meeting Thursday. The $54,433,827 spending plan is about $8,000 less than the proposed budget approved last month.

Scott Dunn, chairman of the board of commissioners, stressed that the county was able to limit spending increases to 0.13% despite higher health care costs.

“We’ve had to do a lot of trimming in other areas to offset these rising costs,” Dunn said in a phone interview.

Also at Thursday’s meeting, the commissioners approved the retirement of Susan Harper, the county’s chief public defender.

Harper had worked in the public defender’s office for more than 30 years, and had been the chief public defender since 2020.

“She was providing a great service to Fayette County. Thank you, Sue,” Dunn said prior to the vote.
