A Uniontown native and decorated Marine was sentenced to eight to 24 years in prison in Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl earlier this year.
Police said Brandon Rumbaugh, 36, of Pleasant Hills, had sex on four occasions in April with the girl, who he had known since she was 10.
He pleaded guilty on Dec. 15 to nine felony counts, including sexual assault, indecent assault of a person under 16, endangering welfare of children, corruption of minors and four counts of child sex abuse material.
Sixteen other felony counts of child sex abuse material were dismissed in exchange for the guilty plea, along with charges of furnishing alcohol to a minor, indecent assault, corruption of a minor by an adult, and criminal use of a telecommunication facility.
Rumbaugh’s attorney, Michael Deriso, and Assistant District Attorney Thomas Paul Kelly, who prosecuted the case, could not be reached for comment.
Rumbaugh, a Uniontown native, had been well-known for his work on behalf of veterans since returning to the area. A double amputee, Rumbaugh lost both his legs in Afghanistan in 2010 when he stepped on an improvised explosive device while trying to aid a wounded serviceman.
In 2015, he spent a month living in the George C. Marshall Memorial Plaza in Uniontown to raise funds for organizations helping homeless veterans.
He also worked as a motivational speaker both locally and internationally, giving talks about overcoming obstacles and advocating for veterans.
