A man is in serious condition at a Pittsburgh hospital after he was stabbed several times early Monday during a dispute in Washington.

City police officers were called to the 300 block of East Hallam Avenue about 3:30 a.m. and found a man who had multiple stab wounds, Washington police Chief Steve Devenney said.

The man, whose identity was not immediately released, was initially taken by ambulance to UPMC Washington Hospital before being flown to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment of his injuries, Devenney said. He was last listed in serious condition, Devenney said.

Police were able to locate a suspect shortly after the stabbing and brought him into custody, Devenney said. As of Monday afternoon, no charges had been filed against the man because he was taken to UPMC Washington Hospital for treatment of medical issues unrelated to the incident, Devenney added. His identity was not immediately released since the matter is still under investigation.

Devenney did not say what precipitated the stabbing or how the two men knew each other, although the incident happened outside on the street.

“We’re still trying to determine the facts that led to the altercation,” Devenney said. “The investigation is still fluid and it’s an open investigation.”

Another person who was in the vicinity called 911 for help, although Devenney was unsure whether the caller knew the victim or suspect.

He added that they’re preparing to file charges against the suspect depending on when he is released from the hospital for the unrelated medical issues.
