State police arrested a driver Monday morning in the city of Washington following a car chase that began in Fayette County.

According to state police public information officer Rocco Gagliardi, multiple arrest warrants had been issued for Eric William Johnson out of Washington County. Johnson, 36, of Washington, was wanted on a bench warrant for failure to appear and a felony charge of prohibited possession of a firearm.

Gagliardi said troopers had received information that Johnson was in the Uniontown area and driving a rented minivan.

“As we’re patrolling that Uniontown area looking for that minivan, other information quickly comes about that that individual switched from the minivan into a GMC silver truck,” Gagliardi said.

At about 9:50 a.m. police located the truck driving on Route 119 and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. Johnson is accused of leading troopers to Route 40 and into Washington.

According to Gagliardi, Johnson eventually pulled into Jefferson Court Plaza on West Chestnut Street, where he was arrested and taken to the Washington County jail.

Gagliardi said that Johnson will be charged with fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer.
