A Brownsville Area school bus carrying 18 students crashed Tuesday morning in Redstone Township, although the district reported all of the children were “safe.”

The crash happened shortly before 7 a.m. on Rowes Run Road in the township, with the bus ending up in a ditch along the side of the road, Fayette County Emergency Management spokeswoman Susan Griffith said.

All the students were evaluated at the scene, and two people were taken by ambulance to WVU Uniontown Hospital for treatment, Griffith said. It was not immediately known what caused the crash or if any other vehicles were involved.

Brownsville Area Superintendent Kristin Frey-Martin said in a written statement to parents posted on the district’s Facebook page that administrative officials and the school nurse went to the scene to “support students” following the crash.

“At this time, we want to assure you that all students are safe,” Frey-Martin said in the statement. “Out of an abundance of caution, each student was being checked individually and, if deemed necessary, referred for further evaluation to ensure his or her well-being. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as needed.”

It was not immediately known what grades the students were in or what school they attended.

State police at the Belle Vernon barracks are investigating the crash. The road was reopened about 8:15 a.m.
