Greene commissioners OK tourism grants
The Greene County commissioners approved a slew of tourism-related at their most recent meeting, including money for local events tied to America’s 250th anniversary and repairs to some county facilities.
The $265,000 for the county’s Tourism Assets Improvement Project will be used to repair the roofs of the Greene County Fairgrounds arena barn and the Mon View Roller Rink in Greensboro. Funding came through a Commonwealth Financing Authority Local Share Account grant announced in December.
The arena barn roof has been leaking, while a storm last year blew off part of the roller rink roof, said board Chairman Jared Edgreen.
“They patched it for now, but it’s going to be a whole new roof,” he said.
The board approved $25,000 from the new Greene County Heritage Tourism Grant program for events throughout the year to celebrate the sesquicentennial. The resolution was in concurrence with the Greene County Tourism Board, which chose from among 21 applicants requesting a total of $51,675 in funding.
“They had to be 250th-anniversary themed, and had to have something tying in to American heritage,” Edgreen said.
A review committee evaluated each application and awarded funding for each based on established program guidelines, Visit Greene said in a statement.
The 21 local events received between $2,500 and $500.
