A Greene County post office is temporarily closed for repairs.

The U.S. Postal Service notified Nineveh residents Tuesday that they would have to go elsewhere for some post office functions for health and safety reasons.

A leaking roof in Nineveh’s lobby and back office “poses a safety concern for customers and employees,” Pittsburgh-area USPS spokesman Mark Wahl said Thursday.

Nineveh customers will continue to receive their mail at the post office during the temporary closure, according to a USPS release. Retail operations, such as mailing packages or buying stamps, have been transferred to the post office in Waynesburg, about nine miles away.

“We apologize for the inconvenience to our customers and plan to have the Nineveh Post Office reopened and fully operational as soon as possible,” USPS said in the notice.

Nineveh resident Donna Roberts, who lives near the post office, said someone from the Waynesburg post office had come to notify her on Tuesday. Over subsequent days, she said, she had seen postal workers removing equipment from the building.

Roberts said she worried the longer travel distance would be a problem for residents, many of whom are elderly. She also feared the move was “essentially wiping out Nineveh,” an unincorporated community.

As of the 2020 census, 47 people lived in Nineveh’s 15353 ZIP code.

The Nineveh address only applies to people who have their mail sent to the post office, she said; if something is home-delivered, the town is listed as Graysville.

“I fought with one lady one day from ordering a package,” Roberts said. “She kept saying, “Ma’am, I don’t know how far away you live from the post office, but you do not live in Nineveh, according to our records.’ And I said, ‘Listen, I’m sitting on my porch right now, and I could put my broom out and touch the post office.'”

Wahl said Thursday there is no set date for reopening. Once a date is determined, the USPS will post a release on its online newsroom and also share it with local media, Wahl said.
