The Fort Necessity Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) asked Fayette County students from grades 5 through 8 to imagine what it would be like to sit down with one of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence.

Thirty-two students wrote essays about having “Lunch with a Signer,” the most single-year participation in the chapter’s American History Essay Contest.

Students were asked to explain whom they would choose and how that signer’s actions and service contributed to American independence. Essays ranged from 300 to 1,000 words depending on grade level.

Participants represented St. John the Evangelist Regional Catholic School and Lafayette School.

Winners, all from Saint John the Evangelist Regional Catholic School, are Leah Wilhelm, grade 6; Nathan Goletz, grade 7; Chase Zahela, grade 8. They will advance to the state-level competition.
