Scottdale motorcyclist killed in Route 819 crash

By Mike Jones 1 min read

A Scottdale man died Tuesday afternoon when his tri-wheeled motorcycle was involved in a rear-end crash with another vehicle in East Huntingdon Township.

Mark F. Hixson was traveling north on Route 819 shortly before 2:45 p.m. when he struck the rear of an SUV near Cedar Drive, Westmoreland County Coroner John Ackerman said in a press release.

Hixson was wearing a helmet, but was thrown from the motorcycle and struck the ground, Ackerman said. He was pronounced dead by the coroner’s office less than an hour later.

Ackerman determined the cause of his death to be blunt force trauma and listed the manner of death as accidental.

The East Huntingdon Township Volunteer Fire Department posted on its Facebook page that Route 819 was closed for more than two hours between Fenton Road and Overholt Drive. Motorists were urged to take other routes around the crash site while state police investigated and the wreckage was removed from the roadway.

State police did not immediately release additional details about the crash.
