Whitewater Washington
Re-enactors portraying a young George Washington and his guide float down the Youghiogheny River from the Confluence outflow campgrounds Thursday in a makeshift log raft as they recreated his exploratory voyage that happened 272 years ago. Washington launched the expedition down the Yough on May 21, 1754, in an attempt to see if the river could be navigated by boat, but had to end the voyage before arriving at the falls in what is now known as Ohiopyle. The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources spearheaded the re-enactment, alongside workers at Ohiopyle State Park as part of the “Youghopoly” series of events.
