A bomb squad was called to South Connellsville Sunday after new homeowners found a live mortar.
Sue Kozak-Griffith, public information officer for the Fayette County Emergency Management Agency, said a call came in at 1:20 p.m. Sunday for a suspicious object in the 1900 block of Fourth Street.
The home’s new owners were cleaning out items left by the previous owners when they found what appeared to be a mortar, said Sgt. Brian Connors of the Connellsville Police Department.
Police called the Allegheny County Police Department Bomb Squad to inspect the device. They determined it was a live mortar dating back to the Civil War era.
Connors said the bomb squad removed the mortar from the home, and planned to detonate it in a safe place.
