Cumberland Township is getting long-awaited upgrades to its sewer system.

At Thursday’s meeting, the Greene County Board of Commissioners approved the release of $1.9 million in Community Development Block Grant funds it had secured for the project.

Board Chairman Jared Edgreen said the upgrades were “much-needed.”

The township had been making patches here and there to its system, which included terracotta pipes dating back about 100 years. At a meeting last year, township officials described ongoing problems with the lines, which are also subject to invasion by root systems.

New manhole covers will also replace the handmade brick ones that had begun to deteriorate.

The state CDBG most recently approved funding for Cumberland Township in June.

The multi-year project combines several years worth of CDBG appropriations, said Nikki Mickens, executive director of the county’s CDBG office.

“They’re doing sewer laterals to 15 houses, some sewer lining,” she said. “People on one street have sewage coming up in their yards, so that’s going to be taken care of, where they reline, and replacement of manhole covers.”
