Pa. American Water customers to receive settlement credit

1 min read

Pennsylvania American Water has applied a fourth credit to water customer accounts from settlements with manufacturers of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The latest $7.10 credit, applied on Oct. 12, brings total PFAS-related settlement refunds to nearly $44 per customer. The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) approved the company’s PFAS Litigation Universal Credit Rider, which allows the company to provide PFAS settlement proceeds to customers.

A credit of $6.13 was issued in July. The nearly $44 in PFAS settlement credits distributed to water customers is equivalent to about 15 days of water service for a typical residential customer.

Last year, Pennsylvania American Water agreed to give $18 million in credits to customers as a result of a settlement it received from the makers of polyflouroalkyl and perflouroalkyl, which have been dubbed “forever chemicals” and have been pinpointed as heaving adverse health effects on humans following long-term exposure.
