Laurel Highlands Middle School sets return date for in-person learning
Laurel Highlands Middle School will return to in-person instruction on Sept. 15, the district announced Wednesday afternoon.
In a Facebook post, Assistant Superintendent Jessica Scott said staff would return to the school on Monday, Sept. 14, for a prep day. That night, there will be an open house at the middle school from 6 to 8 p.m. for a student open house to allow them to tour the building and locate their classrooms before school resumes.
A portion of the middle school will remain blocked off until restoration work is finished.
In-person classes were delayed after the discovery of mold and mildew at locations within the school, which Superintendent Jesse Wallace last month said was caused by the use of pipe insulation that was not rated for cold-water pipes. Students have been attending classes online since school resumed Aug. 25.
Tests conducted at the school last month showed air quality to be normal, Wallace said.
Two classes will remain at the high school through Sept. 21. All other affected classes will be held elsewhere in the building, Scott said in the Facebook post.
“Our staff is ready to guide students and make this transition smooth, comfortable, and welcoming for everyone,” Scott said in the post.
