Everson council to vote on securing public property, law enforcement records
The Everson Borough Council will vote Tuesday on emergency measures including assuming control of law enforcement records and revoking access after last week’s vote to formally suspend the borough’s police department.
In a post on the borough’s Facebook page, council members said the Sept. 16 vote to suspend the department came after many years of difficulties maintaining a full-time police force.
“Recently, staffing shortages left our town with less than 10 hours of local coverage per week out of 168 hours,” council members said in the post. “Our town and our residents deserve constant protection.”
Police coverage will be provided by the Pennsylvania State Police – Belle Vernon Barracks, which had been handling the vast majority of calls, council members said.
The borough’s mayor and council president had not responded to requests for comment Monday.
A discussion item listed under the resolution for the Sept. 16 meeting agenda had asked about what would happen to the two police cars that would be decommissioned.
The resolution being considered at Tuesday’s special meeting would authorize council to take emergency measures to secure public corporate property, take legal custody of municipal law enforcement records, revoke access credentials, and designate an emergency repository.
