Edward J. Sumego, Sr.

Mr. Edward J. Sumego, Sr., 74, of Uniontown, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ Saturday, August 9, 2025, in UPMC Shadyside.

He was born April 6, 1951, in Uniontown, to the late Joseph P. and Anna Rose Spirko Sumego.

Edward graduated from German Township High School, Class of 1970.

He married Kathleen Shotter September 27, 1975.

Edward was employed as a coalminer at Maple Creek Mining Inc.

He was a member of St. Mary Nativity Church.

Edward was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 1248, a life member of Uniontown Musical Society, American Federation of Musicians Local 596, National Rifle Association, social member of AMVETS Post 103, Hutchinson Sportsman Club, 3rd Degree of Uniontown Knights of Columbus Council 1275.

He enjoyed being a drummer in the local band, “The Vibrations”, golfing, bowling, and dancing with his lovely wife, Kathleen. They enjoyed dancing to polka, rock, square dance, and ballroom dancing.

Edward is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Sumego of Uniontown; two sons, Edward J. Sumego, Jr. and wife Heather of Levittown, and David Sumego and wife Jessica of Holt, Mich.; six grandchildren, Abigail, Ethan, Levi, Allen, Christopher, and Emma; two sisters, Roseann Caplinger of Akron, Ohio, and Debi Fronczek and husband Syl of Uniontown.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Roger Caplinger; and a nephew, William “Bill” McGaffick.

Viewing for Edward will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, in the STEPHEN R. HAKY FUNERAL HOME, 603 N. Gallatin Avenue Extension, Uniontown, PA 15401. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 14, in St. Mary Nativity Church, 61 N. Mt. Vernon Avenue, Uniontown, PA 15401, with prayers of transfer at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m.

Entombment is in Sylvan Heights Cemetery.
