Jean Polando, 84, of Smock, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

She was a devoted and loving mother who considered her children to be her greatest achievement and joy in life. Known for her selflessness, she would gladly give her last cent if it meant helping her family. She supported and nurtured her children, enabling them to enjoy life and achieve success.

Proud of her Polish heritage, Jean delighted family and friends with her famous homemade sugar cookies, apricot, nut, and poppyseed rolls, which she lovingly baked for every holiday. Her kitchen was always a gathering place filled with warmth, laughter, and tradition.

Energetic, entertaining and always ready for an adventure, Jean never said no to an outing. She played with her children when they were young, sled-riding in the snow and later enjoyed many cruises and vacations with them. Friends and family admired her honesty, quick wit, and the way she spoke her mind with refreshing candor.

Jean was a faithful member of St. Therese Roman Catholic Parish in Uniontown, where she drew strength and comfort from her faith. She also extended her generosity beyond her home by sponsoring a child through the Save the Children program.

During her extensive career spanning several decades, Jean served as the Fayette County law librarian, managed the publication of the Fayette Legal Journal and provided support for the Fayette County Lawyer Referral Service until her retirement at age 55.

Above all, she was the cherished matriarch of her family. Her legacy of love, strength, and devotion will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Jean is survived by her children: Kenneth and fiancee, Jennifer Workman, Christina and husband, Ed Gray, and Frederick. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Benjamin Polando and Ray Petrisko and wife, Tanar Bingel; as well as five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth “Toot” Polando; her parents, Ben and Agnes Supensky; and her siblings: Alice Geib, Ben Supensky, Frank Supensky, John Supensky, and Josephine Deberry.

Family and friends are invited to attend visitation from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27, at DEARTH FUNERAL HOME 35 South Mill Street, New Salem, where a Prayer Service will be held at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, August 28, followed by A Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Therese de Lisieux Church, 61 Mill Street, Uniontown. Interment at St. Hedwig’s Cemetery in Brier Hill.
