Robert Shannon “Bobby” VanSickle, Jr., 83, died peacefully in Ruby Memorial Hospital Friday, July 31, 2026, surrounded by friends who loved him. Bobby was born February 27, 1943, in Markleysburg, to the late Robert and Rachel Langley VanSickle, Sr. He moved to the house on Flat Rock Road when he was two months old and spent his life there.

Bobby was a quiet man, whose gentle nature and calm demeanor were always evident in his everyday life. He served his community in countless positions, acting as deacon and greeter every Sunday morning at Union Chapel Church, where he attended all his life. Bobby loved his Lord and the many friends he left behind know that he is in heaven singing his praises, along with his parents and his sisters, Doris and Hazel, who preceded him in death.

Bobby was the last member of his immediate family. He never married.

Bobby wore many hats in his lifetime working as a garbageman for the mountain area, groundskeeper for many cemeteries, handyman and general all-around maintenance guy when the need arose. One of his favorite people to work for was Jean Hoover of Beaver Creek Road on her estate, where she served as a second mother to him, insisting on calling him by his proper name Robert. They had a special bond for many years and numerous adventures together. Florence Van Sickle also held a special place in his heart.

Bobby is survived by his cousin, Roger Van Sickle; and a host of friends and good neighbors, who will miss his presence in their lives.

His last act of kindness was to donate his body to the Human Gift Registry at WVU Hospital.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to be announced.
