Thomas Edward Matis
Republic
Thomas “Tommy” Edward Matis, 63, of Republic, passed away peacefully, in his home, Monday, August 17, 2026.
Born the youngest son of the late George J. Matis and Mary C. Malaspina Matis, Tommy was a 1982 graduate of Brownsville Area High School. In his younger years, he was a member of the Republic Volunteer Fire Department and enjoyed working as a car mechanic.
Tom had a youthful spirit that stayed with him throughout his life. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He enjoyed country music and doing word search puzzles.
He is survived by his daughter, Selina Matis; his siblings, Irene (John) Jacobs, Alice Matis (John Scerba), James (Carolyn) Matis, Joanie (Fred) Staley, George (Lois) Matis; nieces and nephews, Jeremy Thomas, Kevin Jacobs, Nicole (Roger) Cline, Geo (Karley) Matis, Jim Matis; his great-nephew, Kyler; and great-nieces, Josie and Lakelyn; as well as many extended family members and friends, who will miss him.
The family would like to express its sincere appreciation to Charlene Fenton of Faithful Home Care and the many compassionate caregivers that Tom has had.
The Republic V.F.D. will have a service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, in the funeral home.
Tom’s family will receive friends in the KISH-FABRY FUNERAL HOME, INC., from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, where Prayers of Transfer will be prayed at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, August 20, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church (Footedale Worship Site), Footedale. Interment will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Free Care Fund, a cause with a special connection to Tom and his family. As an infant, he battled meningitis and its complications, and the Free Care Fund helped provide the care that saved his life.
