John Edward Hart, 78, of Millsboro, passed away peacefully, in his sleep, in the early morning hours of Monday, August 24, 2026.

John was a lifelong resident of Millsboro and a 1965 graduate of Bethlehem Center High School. He went on to graduate from California University of Pennsylvania, where he earned both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Elementary Education.

John dedicated 37 years of his life to teaching third grade in the Chartiers-Houston School District.

While teaching was his career, John always wore many hats and gave much of his time to the community. John was a devoted member of the East Bethlehem Volunteer Fire Company for 43 years, serving as chief for 28 of those years, and for a time, was president of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Chief’s Association. He was also one of the first paramedics in Washington County and worked for Greenlee Ambulance Service.

For many years, you could also find him tending bar at Bartoletti’s in Fredericktown. Many will remember him with a paintbrush in his hand or driving his work van throughout the summer months. He was truly dedicated to providing for his family and giving back to his community.

John was a passionate Penn State football fan and attended every home game with his wife for 41 years. He followed the team around the country and even internationally. He was also an avid Pittsburgh sports fan and loved watching the Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins.

John loved to travel, especially after retirement, and his adventurous spirit took him scuba diving around the globe. Among his favorite destinations were Tahiti, Alaska, Hawaii, and various locations throughout the Caribbean. When he was home, John enjoyed watching Westerns, gardening, and reading.

John is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Ann Dean; his daughters, Sarah Rasel (Griff Elder) and Susanna (Matt) Babko; his grandchildren, Xavier, Aubrey, and Norah; and his brother, James Hart.

He was preceded in death by brother, David Hart; father, Ralph Hart; and mother, Helen Hart of Millsboro.

He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends, who will carry his love, his hearty laugh, and his rich legacy in their hearts.
